I just got my new cam in my 302. I've done this before, but can't recall the tips or technique. What is the method of adjusting the valve rockers? I remember to do zero lash where the push rod has slight drag. then a quarter turn more? Any suggestions on eliminating starting the engine and adjusting the valves that way. Trying to avoid spitting oil all over my nicely chromed/ painted engine.
What year is the engine? Does it have stud mounted rockers or pedalstal mounted rockers?
With stud mounted rockers and a hydralic lifter cam, get a drag on the pushrod, with the lifter on the base circle of the cam lobe, and then 1/2- one turn more.
Not sure what a stud mount or pedalstal mount is? It has a stud going into the the head, the rocker arm, a half round washer and a locking nut. The threads on the stud do not thread all the way to the casting. I believe the engine is a 69 302. Do I have to get adjustable nuts for the rocker arms? The cam has a 470 lift with a 272 duration.
It's stud mount. Go through the firing order adjusting the valves for each cylinder at TDC. IIRC, Crane Cams has you watch the lifter on the other valve to the cylinder, and as it just starts to to come up, you adjust the rocker to the companion valve. Tighten the nut down untill you can just barely still spin the pushrod with your finger, then an additional 1/2 to 1 full turn.
