I bought my 04 SCAB on 04 April 2004. Since about 20 April, the brakes have been squeeling. I've had it in the shop on 11 June, 22 June, and 21 July to have the problem fixed. The first time they grinded down the pads and roters on the front. That worked for about three days. The second time they grinded down the pads and roters on the back. That lasted about 10 days. This time, the service manager says they called Ford engineers who advised that newly designed pads would be out later this year that would correct the noise. Their advice was to wait several months and hope the noise goes away. If not, give them a call and they would put the new pads on. I've called other dealers and get the whole story on the excess dust, which doesn't bother me. The main annoyance is the noise. Having paid $33K for the truck, I don't want to invest the money or time replacing perhaps faulty pads on my own. Do I have any other avenues to approach to get this resolved? I've ordered an application for the Dispute Settlement Board, but this could take several months to resolve. Anyone have any suggestions?
Disc brakes are prone to squealing & as you know sometimes this noise is very difficult to eliminate. It comes and goes according to the causes ( like pads that are slightly loose or maybe dirt etc on the rotor surf.) and almost every owner of a vehicle with disc brakes has dealt with this at times. The dealer has tried to reduce the vibes by turning the rotors and resurfacing the pads, so give it a longer try and see if the pads & rotors seat any better with reduced noise and if they do not, go back later and see about the new design pads on warranty. Also, consider that Ford may be using metallic composition type pads on these new trucks, which if true, are troublesome with respect to brake noise. You've probably heard this little story before but if not, maybe it will help some--good luck.
FYI - My brother just picked up his 04 SC STX 2 weeks ago. A friend noticed a lot of braked dust on the front passenger side tire and said there was a TSB for replacing the brake pads (I didn't see a TSB for this). The brake dust didn't bother him either but he took it in anyway and they said they already had the new pads and they would replace them. I would check back with your dealer to see if they got the new pads yet.
You can get ceramic pads that will stop that. I havent replaced mine yet. I do clean my rotors with brake clean often. It is inconvienient but helps. The ceramic are about 112.00 and I just cant give that up when the pads on my truck are still good.

Lardman,
I asked about the TSB at my dealership, and was told there was one, but brake pads were not covered under warrenty. Was your brother charged for the new pads, and did the new pads stop the brake dust problem?
Thanks,

BD,
No, he was not charged for the ceramic pads and yes the problem has stopped. Actually, they gave him a free rental car on top of it...and he does not have an extended warranty. One thing that did tick my brother off is they turned the rotors. With the way they make today's rotors, he'll probably have to get new ones next time. I just picked up a 04 s-crew last week and I have the same brake dust problem (@900+ miles). I have to call my dealer today and see what they say. I used a different dealer than my brother (gave me more for my trade). Hopefully I don't get the run around.
Update-The ceramics the tealer installed fixed the problem for about a month. I saw his truck last weekend and the dust is back with a vengence. Makes you wonder if they did use ceramics.
