The front bearing in my '91 Aerostar's 4.0l went south last night, taking the front seal as well. In order to replace the pump, I need to remove the ac compressor, then the bracket holding the pump, right? Take the pump and bracket out as a whole unit, remove the ps pulley from the pump, remove the pump from the bracket, and reverse to reinstall? I'm trying to avoid any unpleasant surprizes.
you might find it easier to deal with the pulley while it's still mounted. I've gone through several of those boogers on my 94, until I finally replaced the rack & pinion at the same time. Make sure you get your lines back up and in place when your done, it's not fun to discover them dragging the ground later. Good luck.
The pump is like other ford power steering pumps and there is a neat little puller you can buy for small $$ that removes the pully before you take the pump off the bracket. The pulley has to come off the shaft to get it off the bracket.
I just did my mustang and the pump on the aerostar is the same set up.
There may be a difference in threads (sae vs. metric) on the newer pumps so make sure you get the one for your application.
Here is the url to a page that shows an example of what you need.
I'd also recommend installing an in-line filter on the return line, like a 3/8" magnefine. I wished I'd put one on mine BEFORE my pump sent metal shavings through the R&P. I have one on both my vehicles now.
