this weekend I was traveling on the highway and the check engine light came on and off a dozen times durring my travel. The 1999 7.3 power stroke also began to run on seven cylinders or less. The motor has 93k on it and has been maintained regularly including fuel filters etc. I belive it is a clogged injector. My question is can a regular mechanicly inclined guy rebuild his own injectors rather than swap them for several hundred dollars each?
You might want to check for an electrical problem first. The injector harness may have shorted out or have a bad connector.
Quoted again for emphasis. An electrical problem would trigger your check engine light, like what you experienced. Get a scanner (or take it somewhere), and check the code from the dummy light.
I will check the electrical today, The engine miss that was coupled with the check engine light would come and go. The engine would run fine for a while then it would stumble for a while. What is good brand of code reader? Thanks for the reply
If you don't already, I recommend adding a fuel conditioner like Stanadyne or Diesel Kleen to your fuel periodically. It will help keep the fuel system clean. As for the reader, it might be cheaper to take it somewhere, like Pep Boys or AutoZone. I've heard some will check it for little or no cost.
