I have a 1994 Ford Explorer 4X4. I was heading to work and turned a corner and heard a pop and the tranny acts like it is in neutral. There is nothing in any of the gears. The only gear that works is Park. I haven't pulled the pan on the tranny yet, but the Fluid looks clean on the dipstick and doesn't smell burnt at all.
I had it towed home and it has sat for about a week. I went out and started it up to keep the battery charged up and it started and heard a knocking sound like a rod in the engine. After about 3 or 4 secs is goes away.
Also, the tranny was rebuilt about 18 monthes ago.
Does anyone have any ideas?
If I have to swap out the tranny, what years of Explorers can I get one from?
My 86 Bronco II did the same thing. It was the o/d sprag. I had an extra 2wd A4LD so I just replaced the sprag. r&r of the trans is the worst part.

Check this out: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...threadid=95244Sure, it's heresy. But if you read through this site, the misery caused by Explorer trannies makes this something to look at, especially if you 4 wheel and are going to keep your rig for some time, and are out of warranty anyway.
