I've owned 4x4s for years but never increased tire size enough to require new gearing. Now I'm going from stock tires to 38s on 97 psd 4x4 cc auto trans. I have 4.10 gears now. Here are the questions: Where exactly are these gears and how hard are they to change? Where is a good place to get the correct gears for the new tire size?
Thanks for any input.
The gears are in your front and rear differentials, your best bet is to call up a shop that specializes in doing rear end work, in the SF bay area for example there is a good one in Santa Clara called Rear End Specialties. A shop that specializes in this type of work can tell you the best ratio for the driving your going to do and should be able to offer you the best pricing for this kind of work.
I know this ain't the place, but I have a BRAND NEW set of 5.13s for my 95 and if yours is a SA Dana 60, they'd probably work pretty well. I don't plan on keeping the PSD (pos) in there for too long (going to a REAL diesel) and my 4.10s will work perfect with a torque peak near 1600 RPM. TRUE 38 inch tires and 5.13 gears and .78 overdrive will put you at about 2650 RPM (right about where the PSD likes to run).
Sorry it took so long to get back to you.....didn't know about the messages thingy in the upper right-hand corner there.
E-mail is enabled now. I did send you a message by the way.
Setting the rear is a heckuva lot easier than the front. Dana had good axles, but the guy that came up with the 'shims behind bearings' idea needs a swift kick in the face. Oh yeah, and don't forget the lovely case spreader..... Oh well, get the front close cuz ya don't use it on the road (who cares about a little noise?) set up the rear good, and go.
setting up gears is easy if you have the right tools and patience but with a PSD and 4.10's already what's the point? I am running 39" IROK's 460 and 4.10's and I love this setup! I will change to 5.88's when i move up to 46" michies
