By mid week I should have my 300 6 all done. I have installed hedman headers, offy dp intake, holley 4 barrel 390 carb, and full header back true dual exhaust and a k&N filter. I am expecting a huge gain in HP and tq. I will keep you guys updated. In the winter I will be installing a new camshaft and a nitrous 4 barrel plate system
Your not gonna find or get a whole lot of power improvement ("HUGE GAINS in hp & tq")
with the normal run of the mill "bent 8" modifications. This engine was not designed to spin "FAST" and make a lot of HP. It was designed as a "LOW SPEED- HIGH TORQUE" truck engine(read tractor engine). As such it normally doesn't see the far side of 3000 rpm's on most days in 99% of the engines built.
The improvements you mentioned above are great for engines turning over 4000-5000 rpm's on a regular basis.
Even with head uncorked, with the mods above don't expect anymore than 200hp TOTAL or 280-300 ftlb's torque.
Watch - you'll be happy - a standard 300 puts out about 140 hp - with your mods you are looking at 200 hp easy - it's true that the hedder with the duals are for a higher reving engine; but, they won't hurt you either.
Let us know what you think when you get to drive your project.
I have a holley 390, offy intake, split headers (supposedly clifford) with dual 2.5" exhaust and turbos, and supposedly a rhoades cam and hyd lifters. I can't vouch for the last, as this is just what the guy I bought it from says, but it really goes, and I don't even have it tuned. The timing is hand set, and the carb leaves wet spots on the intake, and it still goes really good. You will be happy, as long as you aren't expecting a fast spinning hotrod. It chugs along really good. Ted
I doubt you'll be looking at 200 horses, simply because the stock cam is no good above about 4k rpm, and no matter how big the external stuff is, you have to spin faster to pump enough air to break 200. But... you should be at 175 easy, and you'll feel it for sure.
I did the upgrade the first of the year. I used EFI manifolds and have great low end power and a good mid range increase but not any top end. It still has good torque in a ramges.
ok I got the truck back and I have one problem. IT has a terrible bucking problem in second gear if you don't drive it a sprcific way. You have to give it a good amount of revs and then engage the clutch and still it doesn't have a ton of speed off the line. I have the four speed with the granny gear and the faster you get out of second the better off you are. I feel like I can pull a house in second and then in third and fourth it has a ton of extra power. It is almost like drive a vehicle with a lot of turbo lag. Any suggestions
I am by no means the expert, but it sounds to me like a vacuum/timing problem. The advance maybe doesn't like your new setup. Maybe advance it a little. I just loosened the bolt and hand cranked it until it "felt" right. Of course a light would be a little more accurate The reason I say these two is that the advance is vacuum run, so maybe it won't run right. When my advance didn't work at all, it would do this. Since I swapped the dist. it isn't a problem any more, but I am sure yours isn't broke since it was fine before. Hopefully someone more knowlegable than me can shed a little light. Ted
I know my mechanic checked the timing because the idle is the smoothest it has ever been. I am not that familiar with carbs and distributors because this is my first vehicle with either. What bolt do I loosen the advance the timing
The one that holds the base of the dist. However, if you had it timed professionally, maybe you should hold off messing with it until you are sure it is the problem. Ted
ok here is the lastest. Now the truck is idling quite high and today when I went to shut the truck off it revved real high and I heard a loud noise and I got a puff of white smoke from under the hood
