[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Jun-02 AT 10:55 AM (EST)]Alright, new poster here looking for a little help. I have a 93 Explorer 4X4. I recently replaced the radius arm bushings in an attempt to get rid of a clunk in the front end and it worked for a while. Now I have a steering problem. When I turn, the wheels do not "re-center" or return to normal but will continue to turn. I have to force the steering wheel back. The truck also wanders a bit, pulling to the left sometimes and other times to the right. Any thoughts?
I did reently put 31" BFG All-Terrain tires on, but other than that I haven't done anything to lift the truck.
Forgot to mention this too, I have a serious vibration between about 65-75 mph. The whole truck shakes, but it doesn't feel likes it's in the front wheels, the steering wheel doesn't vibrate like a wheel being out of balance.
the steering box is probably bad i just had to replace mine also a friend had the same problem and replaced his ford makes a real lousy steering box if you replce it it's better to buy new instead of a used one from a salvage yard because you never know what you are going to get
I've got the same vibration. Mines a 2wd though. My local dealer said there was a bulletin to replace, motor mounts, shocks and the muffler. And they had never done it before and couldn't sure it would work. This spring when I put the summer tires back on the vibe got much worse. Turned out not to be the tires so I finally replaced the shocks, it helped some but you can still feel it a bit. Not to crazy about trying the motor mounts their $700 or more cann't remeber exactly the muffler I have my doubts but maybe when the stock one falls off I'll see if that helps.
I have the same problem in my 96 Explorer 4x4. I thought it was the steering pump, which I replaced - the problem came back so I then replaced the rack & pinion, which also didn't cure the problem. I noticed that the rubber boot that covers the joint on the lower steering shaft was ripped on both ends. Rusty/dirty fluid came out when I pulled the column out. I poured a lot of Liquid Wrench in there and then some spray lube and the problem seems to have disappeared. As of yet, I have not found an aftermarket part for the lower column so it looks like I'll have to spend $200+ at the dealer for a permanent fix.
