What are you getting for gas mileage now and what set up do you have on your Ex? I have a '91 Explorer Sport 4x4 with the 5 speed, 3.73 limited slip rear, and 235/75r-15 tires and I consistently get 15-17 city and 19-21 highway with it. The only upgrades I have done are manual locking hubs and I removed the two roof rack bars.
I have a 2001 sport and I did the K&N filter charger. Seems to gove me better power but I havent really noticed a difference in Milage, which is the reason I got it. I am trying to work on some ideas for moving to a motor drive for my compressor and fan which should get me more mileage.
If you want to spend the money, you could go with an electric fan, like the ones that Flex Fan makes. I have heard of +2.5 MPG on 5.4L F150s from just installing the twin fan electric fan set up.
A couple things that will hinder gas mileage is:
Do you drive around a lot with the windows down? This causes a lot of drag and will cause the Ex. to suck a lot more gas.
Running the right tire pressure?
The FIPK kits don't usually give a real noticeable difference in mileage, but adding a good flowing cat back exhaust system might help to bring more out of the motor and help with the mileage.
My 91 xlt 4x4 5 speed gets 17 city and 19 highway (70+ MPH). It now has 189K miles. I put 68K of them on it. Of these 68K miles, I have a lifetime average of 17.8 MPG. I record every fillup and all maintenance in a little book I keep in the glove compartment.
My 98 V8 AWD xlt gets 15 local and 16 -17 highway. Lifetime average of 16.3 for the last 20K miles. Same deal here for the record keeping.
I doubt that there is any modification that would improve fuel economy enough to pay for itself.
I have not done anything to it. The mileage is about 15mpg. I sometimes do drive with my sunroof open. But i definately need to recheck my tire pressure again.
I had another new problem showing up over the weekend. If u can help plz read the next topic i am gonna post.
For the first 4 months of this year, my 92 Explorer
Sport w/5 spd averaged 21.1 mpg. This was all local
driving and mostly in cold weather. The only modification
to get this was installing 4 235-15 passanger car tires
and run them at 35 psi. This type of tire is not what
Ford calls for, but I drive easy and all on paved roads,
so can get away with it. Not recommending this, only
stating what worked for me.

Interesting. Can you expand on the tires? 235/75 or 235/60, etc?
I run 235/75's on mine, with 40 psi (max is rated at 50), and have never gotten over 20 mpg local driving. (see my earlier post).
running with the windows down and your dog is hanging his head out the window creating drag would burn more gas. tho if ur running on fumes, may be a good idea to turn off the A/C so u'll make it to the gas pump. here is where we ask the crazy question...do u know people or have done this yourself: ur running on Empty, the nearest gas station is across town, or u really dont have any money to buy gas with...u mentally urge the needle up off the E. you turn off the A/C, and the radio. why the radio? or ur at a drive up ATM, and u turn ur radio down?!? like ur disturbing the ATM machine or something...hell its a machine, not a drive thru at mcdonalds!

The tires I have are BFG ?, forget the model,P-235 75 R15. Just normal car tires.
I do run close to the speed limit, within the + 5 mph they give you before getting a ticket.
However, I do accelerate quickly, about 1/2 throttle, and up to speed and set the speed control.
This has worked well for reasonable gas mileage on the Explorer.

my needle was at E and i kept it running cuz i was on a street with a lot of gas stations and didn't want to be late for work.. then for some reason the needle went back up to 1/2 tank and then i got another 50k or so before it was back down to E and i filled it up... does my '92 4.o have a reserve fuel tank or is this a safety trick to let us know when we're REALLy about to run out of gas????
Guys - I am really not trying to knock anyone for wanting mileage, but look at what you are driving. It was not aeronomically designed to get great mileage, it weighs too much, and has engines that were not designed to get great mileage. If you want great mileage, then get a new Volkswagon that gets 50 or 60 miles to the gallon. You have a vehicle that was designed to be multi-purpose. Towing, general purpose hauling, travelling, etc. To me, 15-20mpg is a good general average for a vesitile vehicle. My 78 F150 with a 460 get 7-9mpg no matter how you drive it or what you pull. My X, even with all the mods, gets 14-17mpg. When we need gas mileage, we take my wife's Accord which averages 27mpg.
Like I said guys, I am not trying to ruffle any feathers or **** anyone off. I hope you get what I am saying...
