2002 Explorer Timing Chain problem

Purchase a 2002 Explorer 2 weeks ago, and noticed a pinging/detonation/gurgling sound on light-to-medium acceleration, mostly under 50 mph. Brought back to dealer to fix. Apparently Ford issued a service bulletin pertaining to a timing chain tensioner problem they were having, and replaced free of charge under warranty. 6-1/2 hours labor! Must be a hell of a job to take most of an engine apart on a V-6? Just a helpful hint in case anyone else has a loose timing chain slapping around indside your motor too. Take Care! Rocketman.

Question

What is the story with Ford Services Bulletins (SB)? I understand thier are over 300 on my year. Is it like a recall?

Can I goto the dealer now with SB before the tensioner fails in my 98 Explorer 4.0 SOHC?

Thanks
David

Usually the TSB's are just information that they send to the dealer, they are NOT recalls. They are useful to the mechanic to help quickly identify any issues...can save a lot of diagnostic time. Also, they don't like when the TSB's get out to the public since they are intended just for the deal service departments. However, I have heard of people getting somethings fixed under warranty with them if there's a legitimate problem related to the TSB.

If your vehicle isn't showing any of the problem signs and you just try to force a repair based on the TSB....get ready for a battle at most service departments.

This is for "OPTIONS"
David, the way I understand it,the chains (three of them) are covered for seven years and the cassettes(tensioners) are covered six years.Mileage limit is 100,000.
The grinding, clattering noise has to continue AFTER a five minute warmup before you can get any help from your dealer. It's usually too late by then!
Switch over to straight synthetic oil. That seems to help a little.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the great reply. I change my oil every 3k and just started using grease lightning (an oil additive) that Im very happy with. No noise yet.

Hopefully Ill be riding a new F150 Crew cab or Toyota 4runner before the end of the year anyway! Tough choice.
