I just bought my '04 X about a month ago. We've got about 1500mi (6.0PSD) on it so far and loving it! We've found a couple little gremlins that have me slightly concerned and I was hoping someone else had experienced them.
1. When I put the truck into gear (D or R) the truck sort of - I don't really know how to describe it best - feels like it's lunging or maybe like I am pumping the brakes really fast, even though the truck is just idling. It doesn't happen every time. It seems like it does happen when it's cold, though. Any ideas?
2. When I'm towing my boat (which by the way is a joy) and I accelerate from a stop I get a big ole' thud sort of like when you have something heavy in the bed of your pickup and you accelerate quickly making the object slam against the tailgate. Any ideas what this might be?

Thanks for the help!
For the lunging...check your oil level. Drain it down into the crosshatch area on the dipstick. These things need to be in the low level; the HEUI injection system uses the oil to power the injectors, and if it is high, the crankcase will create foam in the oil and the injection system picks it up. This will cause all sorts of issues, ie rough idle, ect. Yours is a typical symptom of this of this; even the "normal" level on the dipstick is too high.
As for the clunking, it is most likely just slack in the trailer hitch, reciever, and ball. Someone else should be able to help you more with this as I rarely ever tow.
If you try the oil, and it does not solve the problem, post this thread over in the 6.0 forum. We together (in the 6.0 forum) can most likely solve the issue.
I tow a lot and even with fairly tight reciever hitch I will get a thud sometimes with a big load. This also can be caused by slipage of the hitch on the ball as this isn't an extremely tight coupler. Try putting some grease on your reciever hitch and also the boat trailer hitch.
1. Does your truck have pilot injection? You'd know if it does if it's very quiet at idle (can't hardly tell it's a diesel kind of quiet). If so, you may need to have the dreaded re-flash for it. It'll make the motor noisier, probably get worse mileage and maybe loose a little power but it does seem to cure that lungeing.
2. My 03 started doing that thud thing recently. I've towed the same trailer a lot of miles without that noise and it's all of the sudden showed up. Same trailer, same hitch. I didn't look into since ford is being forced to buy mine back but it was a bit worrisome.
Our boat does the same thing. Ours is caused from the surge brakes from the tongue of the trailer. What happens is when you stop, it pushes the end of the trailer tongue in to activate the brakes, and when you accelerate again it pops the end back out.
Thanks for the compliment. Actually I'm big, hairy and very norwegion, hence the nanuke label. Amazing what a search on google will get you with the words "ugly pictures". Do I get any kind of prize?
You guys and gals are great and this is a great site!!!
Malder, my 03 was doing the same surging. I checked the oil and it was good. Took it in the flashed my pilot away that didn't fix the problem so the tech had to actually work. Ended up replacing the EGR valve and it fixed the surging. On your noise when towing... maybe your hydrolic brakes on the trailer tongue???
