Hi all....I normally post in the Super Duty section but am helping a friend find/purchase an Excursion.
I found him a 2000 XLT - Original Owner - 5.6 liter?? - Wedgewood Blue - 47,000 miles - 4x4 - Leather interior - Most other options.
The guy is asking $17,000 which seemed like a pretty good price. He says the truck is immaculate. When I go look at it with him tomorrow what should I be looking for as far as problem areas? I will ask about accidents and maintenance records but was wondering if there were any specific problems with the year to ask about?
Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark
I agree with Monsta on this. The 5.4 with 4-wheel drive is a bad idea. The 5.4 is way too underpowered for the Excursion; especially one with 4-wheel drive. You may be getting sweet deal on an X, but I'd hold out for a V10 or Powerstroke. Both of those engines are more than capable of moving the X and getting out of their own way; all while getting respectable fuel mileage. The decision itself lies with whoever is going to buy the vehicle. Choose according to your needs.
Guys..I appreciate the feedback. My friend drove it today and it actually felt really snappy. Most of the use would be for hauling kids around and going to the mountains once in a while to the snow. The truck was in excellant condition will all dealer service records. Only recall or warranty work was to replace the Firestones on it which have only about 200 miles on them. The guy says he gets 12-14 around town.
$17K still seems like a heck of a deal.
He is going to have is wife drive it and she what she thinks. Anything else with the same milage and powerstroke or V10 is at least $5K more.
12-14 mpg city/highway I can believe, but not city only. But as long as your friend is happy with his purchase and choice that is what matters. I would recommend a V-10 or the diesel but thats just me. Best of luck with youe Excursion shopping!!

I agree with groundrat, so long as you're happy, thats all that matters. The powerstroke itself is whats going to boost the price by as much as $5k. The V10 wouldn't up the price by too much. In 2001 the V10 option was about $600 extra; the Powerstroke was $4600. Whichever way you go, you're getting a great travel vehicle. I don't know how to finish this thought, so I'll finish with a smile and a congrats to your friend.
We bought a 2000 4X4 Limited in EMACULATE condition, V-10, 36K miles, Overhead LCD Video w/ DVD player in console, 5 brand new tires w/ all service records ....MINT... for $19,000 from a local dealer.

I say get it if that what your gut is telling you. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
If you're not towing, then the 5.4L will suffice. (I know it is lacking a bit moving my 1200+lbs lighter 03 Expedition with any great authority.) Luckily there are go fast(er) part readily available and you get that pure American V8 rumble from it!
Spartan,
They are pirelli scorpions. As I was looking to buy, I saw them on a number of the Xs. I was under the impression that it was something to do with the tire recall. That was just my guess so there for I could very well be wrong.
Yeah - when I was getting my 03 they had started to put pirelli scorpions on the 4x2's...
good looking tire and handle/rode real well the little bit I drove it...
When I needed to replace my Firestones, I started shopping on the internet and I saw the Pirelli's. A little pricey, but when I saw the load rating, I bought the Michellin's. My tire mechanic said the rating of the OEM Firestones was lacking and told me to go 1 step up on the new ones (Michellin's). You've gotta watch those Pirelli's, they don't (or didn't have at the time I replaced mine) have a tire to truly take on the specs of the Big X.
