Factory tow package?

Thanx for the picture reberhardt.
Sadly, I am now 100% sure that I do not have a transmission cooler : (
I will be towing a pop-up camper (Dry Weight 2245lbs)
do I need a transmission cooler?
Any idea how much that would set me back?
While I'm at it...I was thinking about adding a chip and a K&N filter.
Advice/Opinions??

Thanx again for all the help : )

Ford dictates your towing ability by the axle ratio and trasmission. You will need to determine those first to know what your vehicle is rated at. A 3.73 or 4.10 and an automatic transmission will be rated the highest. Two wheel drive will add a few hundred more to the towing abilities. A tranny cooler is always a good idea, at least on the V6 automatic transmissions. They are notoriously week. One of the worst enemies to an automatic is heat. The cooler will let your tranmsission run cooler regardless of whether or not your are towing. It's just when you are towing, the heat gets worse due to the added load. I don't know if the plug underneith is included on all Explorers. I do know that the mating harness is only included with the tow package. I tend to think Ford may have put the connector underneith on all Explorers though since I remember reading messages from people that went down to Walmart and bought a $15.00 connector for towing. I don't know if the adapter that they were talking about pluged in to what would be my round connector though. The lack of the limited slip will only hamper your towing abilities whenlaunching a boat. For towing a trailer on dry pavement you will never know that you don't have the limited slip.

Factory tow package?

Hey Robert

OK now I'm confused again. I looked under my truck for the connector that you mentioned and couldn't find it. So I went and found the harness kit I had, sounds like the same one you have, it came in a seperate box and has a harness with the grey connector and trailer connector and a nice l-bracket to mount it with. The instructions with the kit showed to connect the grey connector to a mating connector that extends down from the drivers side taillight area, it also says this connector with have a rubber cover over it. So I go look and sure enough I have this connector there, it extends straight down from the driver side tailight between the frame and bumper. The only problenm is that it wasn't covered but instead was being utilized by the license plate lamps. So I guess I could utilize it for the trailer harness but will have to disconnect the license plate laights.
I was just wondering if you know where your licesne plate lamps are connected from and whether the connector your harness connects to traces back to.

That sounds like the aftermarket tow harness that Ford sells. If it was sold by Ford it should have a part number on it. I know my box has a part number on it so I will look and see what it is tonight. Mine does not require disconnecting the license plate lamps to plug it in. There is one main harness that is clipped on to the rear cross member. It is about 1" in diameter. All of the various lights come off of it, including the socket to plug my adapter in to. Mine did not come with an "L" bracket to mount it to but it is not needed either on mine.

I looked at my kit and the part# for it is F87B-15A416-BB. The part# on the harness itself is F87B-13A576-B.

Factory tow package?

Ho do I know if my 95 EB is equipped to tow? It has a small hitch ball attached to the rear fender but I don't know if this means "its equipped for Heavy duty towing" tranny and coolers. What numbers should I look for this? Where?

Thanks!

Factory tow package?

Hello again everyone!

Just wanted to tell someone who may appreciate my accomplishment.
(my girlfriend couldn't care less about working on cars)

After getting all the helpful information from you all, I realized that I was in need of a transmission cooler as my Explorer has the hitch and a 3.73 rear gear set up but no cooler.

I purchased a Hayden transmission cooler from Pep Boys and, after an hour spent trying to figure out the best location to mount it, an extra trip back to Pep Boys for the correct fitting kit, a busted knuckle or two, a few more hours trying to contort my arms into the engine compartment to get the hoses and fittings attached, a rubber gasket (damn thing) to stop the dripping, and a quick test drive,
it appears that there is no more dripping or anything unusual about the way she drives (the Explorer not my girlfriend) :P

I realize this task of installing a transmission cooler would be trivial to most of you.
I just wanted to say thank you again for the info and thought you might get a laugh out of my story.
Until next time,

Factory tow package?

This forum is great! I just purchased a 94 Explorer and planned on towing my camper with it. It had a frame hitch mounted, but no wiring harness, at least I thought.

After reading through this, thanks for the heads up to Dialtone BTW, I realize for sure now that I have the factory towing package, D4 axle, Tranny Cooler, Harness and all!

I will be hunting down the harness adapter from my local dealer and will have a complete package.

Thanks to all!
