I have a 2003 expedition. I put a new alternator on it. After doing so, the check charging system message still appears, as well as the battery light being lit up. I took the vehicle to the store I got the alternator from and they put it on their machine. It tested fine. The battery is also good. I would like to know if there is any kind of a reset. I also disconnected the negative battery cable and tried that. Any help would be great.
Ask the store if they have a code checker that will erase that code. Question for ya, why did you need to replace your alternator? Hope you didn't do what I did and use a cigarette power inverter...lol.
You may want to see if the store has an alternator/battery system tester or go to a place that does. To make sure the voltage is getting to where its supposed to. Definately want to make sure nothing is getting backfed. Check the Recall/TSB's in the upper right side on the page here, make sure there are no probs with the sending unit or the like.
Did you check the battery terminals and make sure they are clean? Did you trace the ground wire and make sure it has a solid connection to the motor? How about the VR?
do you have a navigation system? If so, I'll bet the aftermarket alternator you put on it isn't big enough. My guess is not enough amps? What rating is your alternator?
I don't understand what useing an inverter or a navigation system would have to do with it. I use both on all my vehicles with stock chargeing systems and have NO problems.
The inverters power a laptop & battery chargers and I always have a GPS going.
I have even left them on when the vehicle wasn't running with no adverse effects.

I never said anything about using an inverter. You are probably the 1,000,000 person to use an inverter and aftermarket nav system on your truck with a stock charging system, however, Is yours a stock navigation system in a 2003 Expedition? Doesn't sound like it, so I see why you wouldn't understand. The 2003 comes with a 130 amp alternator for a stock nav system and 110 amp for all others.
I had similar problem also except I have a 99 EB and the problem turned out to be a blown fuse for the alternator. Not sure this applies to you; just wanted to put my two cents in.
