after i posted this topic i checked the ford manual and found that they do not recommend the use of fuel additives. manual says that it could cause damage to the injectors etc. is this true ?
now here is a service message put out by Ford:
Cold Temperature Lack of Power, Poor Economy, Hard Start, Excessive White Smoke:
This could be due to gelling of the fuel, formation of ice in the fuel tanks or lines or poor fuel quality. If diagnosis finds no cause for the above symptoms, try using a fuel conditioner, such as Stanadyne Performance Formula or equivalent, that will improve the cetane level of the fuel. Do not use any product containing alcohol. If the conditions improve with the additive, then find another fuel source or continue to treat the fuel. Broadcast Message 1309, 1464; SSM #17406.
is the powerservice diesel kleen in the gray bottle an equivalent to the stanadyne treatment, and when winter gets here do i need to use an antigel treatment. i was told that the winter blend fuel would be ok
I have used both the PS and the Stanadyne. PS is easier to find. I used the "White bottle" in the winter for the anti gel. If you live in areas where it gets to freezing, I would use the additive that has the anti-gel!
I use the silver bottle Power service. I documented a 1 MPG difference by adding 8 oz for each 10 gal of fuel.
Same stuff I use. It seems to be getting a little better mileage (hard to tell when you drive like me) and somewhat quieter, and I could be imagining this, but it seems ever so what minutely more responsive.

Regardless of the other benefits, at least you are helping to keep your fuel system clean. I'd use it even if it didn't gain any MPG.
6,600 miles...use Power Service at every fill up. Being slightly color challenged I couldnt tell you if the bottle is silver or gray, but I'm chasing the highest cetane rating. I use .64 ounces per gal.
Started using it to early to tell if any MPG / or H.P. gain.
My purpose is to keep everything as clean as possible. You can't always know where your fuel is coming from, how old the ground tanks are, or what the fuel level is in the ground tanks. Not even sure of any cetane level at any given station. Wish they would post it.
I save a little by buying the 96 oz jugs and refilling the 32 oz bottles. The 96 oz jugs are hard to find but some Walmarts have them.
Thank goodness Choctaw Bob and I typically frequent different Walmarts or we would be chasing each other.
I have tried both Power Service and Stanadyne Performance. When I use PS, unlike everyone else, I loose 1-2 mpg and can hear engine more. With Stanadyne mileage stays about the same, maybe a slight increase, and the engine is noticebly quieter. I checked Stanadyne's website and found a local dealer that sells it.
I buy my Powerservice, gray bottle,96oz. at Wally World, price is $10.94.I mix 1oz.for each two gallons, for +6 cetane boost. The bottle says 96oz.treats 100 gal.for +3, or 50gal. for +6,so I round it off.My fill-ups avg.24gals.when showing 1/4 tank,so I use 12oz. I wish there was a better way to measure the stuff.I carry a small tupperware type cup that holds 2oz,and use a funnel,I put in half, then fill up,then the other half so it mixes good,or at least that's my way of thinking.I know my motor seems to smoke less, and the smoke looks white when I stomp on it,not dark. The motor seems to like the stuff,it doesn't hesitate, starts really fast without any smoke, warm or cold.Plus,I like the idea of the additional lubricating qualities, and fuel injector cleaning. The cetane is a bonus, and who knows what kind of #2 the stations are using anyway.I figure whatever they can get the cheapest.I paid 1.64/gal yesterday here in N.louisiana at a discount place, but the truck stops are about 5cents cheaper, but out of the way.Does anyone know if the big names like Chevron,Exxon use any additives they tout,or the same as everyone else?I get about 0.5 mpg actual calculated better than without the stuff, sometimes a little better. Now if I could just keep my foot out of it....
