No Cats (Big Trouble?)

I keep reading and reading about ppl saying that they have gone to garages and the ppl there wont even consider taking a cat off unless it has stopped working properly. I have a 95 Bronco 5.8L I plan on putting bassani headers and true dual exaust from headers back, and of course making an H-pipe were the existing Y-pipe used to be and weld in a O2 sensor fitting so computer reads right, 95 dont have the O2 sensor after the cat so i should be good. You guys keep stating that you are going to be getting in big trouble if you are caught with out cats, but how are you guys going to get caught? Are you meaning if you bring it to a local shop and they see you dont have any, or if you get pulled over by cops and they check your exaust? Cuz I mean when I have to go to emission inspection I am just going to slap the old exaust back on. Besides being in a garage having your vehicle worked on, or a cop pulls you over (whats the chances of that, just to look at your exaust) how are you going to get caught? BTW i plan on welding straight pipe through two cats (one for each exaust pipe) just to make it look visually like I have cats, how are they going to tell me other whys with out cutting them off and inspecting inside (which you guys say is so bad and they wont do) So Im just curious how one goes about getting in trouble about not having cats.

Remember I plan on putting old exaust back on when sniffer test comes about.

Hey man, sounds like a good plan to me. I dont have any cats, but I dont have inspection down here in bama either, I reccommend having no cats and duals on your 351, you should be extremely happy....Ive never heard of anyone getting pulled over and getting their exhaust looked at...unless your doing somehting that you shouldnt be doing, I say you should be just fine. Ive got true duals, no cats, x-pipe 2 FM 40's...going to get sum headers put on when funds permit me to...But anywho, hope all goes well with ya...

Good luck,

IF you are in an area that is under "clean-air" compliance regulations...(like I am, in Houston), you may have noticed a truck parked near a freeway on ramp with some gizmos staked out... these guys sample your emmisions with a laser (or something) then take a picture of the plate, then send you a nasty "get with the program or else" letter.

yeah, they are talking about doing that here too, since we had the #1 and 3 worst smog in the country last year (LA was number 1, Ventura county was #3.) Whats worse is that they are planning on targeting out of state plates, because people here take there cars and register them out of state, so they dont have to get tested every x number of years. the worst part about that is this is a military area, and i can see lots of military people getting pulled over for no other reason than they have out of state plates.

I have a 95 F-250 with a 351. I have a flowmaster 40 series single in and dual out and just turn downs after that. I will admit the sound is exactly what I want deep and powerful. I would like to add some volume though. I believe that I am going to hollow my cat out which is bigger than my 40 series muffler. Can anyone give any advice on how I can add some volume aside from screwing around the catalyic convetor. any help will be appreciated.

All this sneaking around, worrying about being caught, just put on some high flow cats and be done with it. You'll be legal, and pass your emmisions tests.

Well stated and I could not agree more strongly. Play by the rules or get out of the game.

Do high-flow cats really make things that much louder? Seems like a cat is a cat and its going to act as a second muffler.

then remove the "first" muffler. buy a high flow cat and straight pipe it after that. plus its not really worth polluting the air that much just to make it a little bit louder. trucks can sound good w/a cat.

Snow, it's only going to get worse, with more and more people removing cats for "performance", the harder the smog pigs will clamp down on everyone. My test, from plugged cats to gutted there was a big difference, gutted cats verse high flow (carsound) just detectable. On a 95, 4.6 litre engine without cats (gutted) stunk like a motor from the 60's, you can tell from 50' who's removed them. Yes they have "sniffer cars" on highway on ramps, why give them reasons to screw us all? Carl
