Flywheel thickness

I got a used motor from a salvage yard. It came with a flywheel and clutch assy. I threw the clutch away as it was worn, but am trying to determine if the flywheel is good yet. Anyone have a Ford Repair Manual that would have the service limits of a 460 flywheel in it? I've not found it in Haynes or Chiltons. Thanks, I searched the board and thought this would have been discussed before, but came up empty. I know if they are turned down too often, the clutch springs can begin hitting the center flywheel bolts. That happened to my last engine after 3 turndowns.

I don't recall ever seeing a min. thickness for flywheels.

The last time I changed a motor, I checked with the local ford garage. They had a book and I assumed it was a factory shop manual, (am pretty sure it was) and it had the service limit on the flywheel. I forget what it was and I kinda hate to call them, cause they had to take some time to find it in the book. We can only turn these flywheels down so many times, then the clutch springs will start hitting the bolts. Tony

Take it to your local garage that turns brake rotors and drums. They can also turn that fly and or tell you if it's good or not.

I looked in my FORD shop manuals (77 ford F-series) at lunch time and all I could find on this said "if you have to remove more than .045" you should replace it". I have no idea what the new condition flywheel measures, I could not find this spec. any where in the books I have. If it were mine and I knew it had been turned 2 or 3 times I would just replace it to be sure.

Well, I don't think this one had been turned at all, but I can't be totally sure. It still has a beveled edge on it. Thus I'm assuming it's not been turned. Thanks for the info though. I thought I had checked with the ford garage here locally and we found the info in one of the manuals, but it's been awhile and I'm not sure of the details.

I wasn't even suggesting getting it turned. I just be a shop that does that stuff, worth a grain of salt, could tell you for sure... could also call local Ford shop and ask.
