I'm wondering what some of you owners of the '04's think about the readabity of the digital odometer. I think the numbers could be bolder black or possible red so they would be more visible during the day. Also the location seems to be blocked by the steering wheel. Any comments? Is this format new for '04? (mine is the stx)
They didn't have digital odometers and message centers prior to the 04's.
Although, I agree the placement is poor. I find myself peering over the steering wheel at times to see them.
not sure how it is on the stx, you got a picture? as clear as the other displays on mine. on my lariats all the gauges get too bright when turned up. i wish i had fx4 gauges though.
Overall I love my 04 XLT but if i had one major complaint it would be the instrument panel, the digital odometer is hard to see sometimes and would it have killed them to let me see the trip odomteter and the overal odometer both at the same time?
i cant say that ive had a problem with seeing the odometer at all. the steering wheel doesnt block it and the display itself is adequate in my opinion. the instrument panel and guage location took a little getting used to, but after that all is good.
Just a thought here about visability to both the trip and the overall odometer at the same time. There is a discipline on user interfaces. Studies are conducted for every user interface such as the VCR, the wireless phone, the remote control etc. And there are always compromises. But if it is found that the time for a person to form a mental recognition of what they are looking for (trip vs. overall mileage display) with both displayed at the same time is over a set time limit then there would be a valid reason for not displaying both at the same time.
I recently drove a Renault (tiny tinny vehicle) in Ireland. This vehicle had both mileage units displayed. I often wanted to know how many miles I had drive since the road sign that said so and so town x kilometers down the road. I would try to remember the last digit (as in the last digit is a 3 and the town is 5 kilometers down the road, I should look for the town when the digit is at 8) but more than once I forgot which mileage display was my set point.
But then again maybe Ford just wanted to save a penny a vehicle.

That is interesting, I never thought of it in those terms. Maybe I spend too much time looking at my instrument panel.
I noticed that on the other models...but I got the lariat and it's super easy to see the gauges, etc...day or night. The LCD stuff gets washed out sometimes in the sun.
That's interesting that the f-150's have just been equipped with the LCD odometers this year. The main guages have amazing constrast with dash lighting on (at night)-no complaints here. But during the day the smallish & thin bodied numerals on a lime green background just doesn't get it-location of the small mini-message center in lower-right sector of front controls also just doesn't get it. (this is on my stx) thanks for your input.
I have an STX and I think that the glare from the sun mostly blocks the insturment panel, it makes it rather difficult to see in the sunlight. Does anyone else experince this? It seems like they could have put a bigger lip on the dash to prevent the sunlight from putting the tremendous glare onto the gauges. Otherwise, I can see it fine.
