Ever since I have had my 87' F-150, the steering is loose. Like I can be driving down the highway and it will take my full attention to keep it in just a straight line. When I drive other trucks it is much tighter, there has to be a way to tighten it, or is something wrong? Any help would be appreciated!
Peach, have you checked your tie rods, both of mine have gone out, when they go out the steering gets sloppy, it wont stop strait, etc. I had a friend turn the steering wheel back and forth while i was under looking at it. (truck was off) I could see that one of the tie rod ends was bad. Although Ive driven other newer trucks and they seem to have tighter steering, I think mostly because of the ratio. Also an alignment could help, they will tell you if anything is bad too.
Our 91' F150 is like that you can be going strait and turn the wheel about 2 inches both ways and nothing happend, it is allmost like you are floating trying to keep it going strait! Is this what is happening to you ??
I have a 1989 that had the same thing happen. What it turned out to be was the steering shaft that goes from the firewall to the streering box. In the middle FORD uses a plastic bushing, and after time it either falls apart or wears out. An easy way to check it is to have someone move the steering wheel just slightly back and forth and look at your steering shaft to see if the top section moves and the bottom one does not. Hope this helps
