Right fe427tp thats what im thinkin that the pictured tranny might fit....wheater it utilizes the hole isnt realevant but the throw af the shifter is what im talkin. That way I can leave my bench seat in it. I had buckets then went back to a nice bench so my lady could sit with me.....I dont wanna got back to buckets. Not yet anyways.
I forgot about that new streetrod tranny of Dave's. Saw it at Columbus last year. It uses a toploader with a Jeep(?) type shifter tower bolted to it. Makes it look like a T-18 or such. Neat conversion. I think it would bolt in and come up just like a T-18, maybe a hair off location.
I was thinking a std toploader, using a "Indy" universal mount 4 spd shifter. The mount given with it mounts the tower up and away from tranny. Perfect for our trucks. I know you could use a more "factory" style mount, but you need it up anyway. No matter where you mount it, a taller/longer handle will be needed to make it comfortable to drive. I had one of those little 7" handles on mine at first and it hurt my wrist to try to drive it. I cut the handle added about 7" to it. It is up where you have leverage now. Buying a nice handle would work also. I just painted mine shiny black. It's not a show truck anyway.
As for bellhousing....I've never known what housing I have. Never paid any attention....and don't know where I got it actually. I think most of my trannies were the long snout, because I started with small blocks back in the mid 80's. A couple have the Big input conversion done to them, and they come with long snout to be able to use them in either application.

Well as far as the shifter I guess you could use the hurst truck series shifter its made to clear the seat......but ive used them before on a 85 dodge pickup and 2nd and 4th were still right up against the seat and thats with the stock tranny. I think since all of david's tranies are about the same price I'll probobly go withthe street rod tranny when the time comes.
NO, you can get either wide or close ratio in a std toploader.
Like I mentioned, the close ratio was all the rage back in the day, but it really is a bummer because first gear is so high(basically same as second gear in wide ratio). That makes it hard to get started, especially on a hill or with any kind of load. If you ROAD RACE, then it's great.
Looking from the outside, they are undetectable. You need to put tranny in first and count revolutions. 2 3/4 turns at input with 1 to output(means it's a wide ratio). The close ratio is only 2 1/4 turns! When talking about gear ratios....that's ALOT of difference. BTW, on a toploader, the rear most shift rod is 1-2 gear. Rotate the shaft clockwise to put tranny into 1st gear.
My dad gave me the 4 speed out of a '77. Will it work in my '69? The donor is bolted to a straight 6 right now but the bellhousings look the same. Any words of advice anybody?
It will work, but it should be the overdrive 3 spd version, NOT the good 4 spd toploader.
Not sure if the bellhousing is the same though. Never looked at one close enough to know.
debestuss, dont fret. It is easy to get the right one. I have them in ALL my vehicles right now. Two truck and two cars. All the same basic box. I've upgraded the internals on a couple to put up with the abuse of hot rodding them a bit.
