hey ya'll. i just wanted to know if there was anywhere to decode my vin number for my 1992 ford explorer. the vin is 1FMDU34XXNUC85221. like any websites or something. and, is there any special radio system (aftermarket)that works in the 1992 ford explorer? (with a cd player). well, thanks yall.
I don't know of any websites that give VIN codes. I will usually look in a good repair manual; Haynes or Chiltons may have it or go to a library and look in the professional grade manuals. If that doesn't get you the info you need, then you can go to Ford. Your dealer may still be able to decode the VIN, but on the older models, you may have to go through Ford's central "research" department. When I had to get the production date on my BII from the VIN code, Ford was helpful and they were able to get back to me within a couple of weeks.
The first digit is the Country of origin. 1=USA
The second digit is the manfuacturer. F=Ford
The third digit is the type of vehicle. M=multi-purpose
The fourth digit is the GVWR class. D=5,001 to 6,000 pounds
The fifth digit is the model. U=Bronco II or Explorer
The sixth and seventh digits are the chassis and body type. 34=4X4 standard Explorer 4 door
The eighth digit is the engine. X=4.0L V6
The ninth digit is a check digit.
The thenth digit is the year model. N=1992
The eleventh digit is the is the assembly plant. U=Louisville, KY.
The twelth through the seventeenth make up the sequential serial and warranty number. Digit twelve uses the letter 'A' untill the production or sequence of 99,999 units is reached. Letter 'A' then becomes the letter 'B' for the next production sequence of vehicles.
owner said this 76 150 was a high boy, I thought they all were 250s, will the vin tell me anything?
F14YUB77248
High Boy is an enthusiasts term for 1967/76 F250 4WD's & 1977 F250 4WD's assembled before serial number Y20,001 (which occured mid-model year 1977).
There is no such thing as an F100/150 or F350 High Boy.
F14 = F150 4WD Pickup.
Y = 360 2V
U = Louisville KY Assembly Plant.
B77248 = 1976.
mrshorty: Over the past 44 months, I've decoded well over 700 VIN's/Warranty Plates/Certification Labels for FTE members using the apropos Ford parts catalogs.
FTE has VIN decoders, but...IMO, they aren't worth two cents, as they have multiple errors and omissions.
I can decode any of this info from 1948 thru 2001 for all FoMoCo vehicles. Prior to 1948 (trucks), 1949 (cars) there were no VIN's. Vehicles were registered by their specific engine number.
The problem was, if the engine was changed, the number on the registration no longer matched the engine number.
In 1947, Les Kelley of the the Kelley Kar Company, CA's largest used car dealer (and a Ford Dealer in Los Angeles) proposed registering the entire vehicle using a Vehicle Identification Number.
This is the same Kelley that founded Kelley Bue Books.
G'Day, Are you able to help me please. I have a 1979 Ford Louisville Truck and I am trying to find out what it's original build specifications were. This truck may have been an Australian build.
The VIN is AL5LWK65383V
The Ford SIDO Number is 778186
