I have an old 1978 F150 4x4 I picked up last month that I plan to rehab. I am wondering what a good set of heavy duty shocks would be for this truck. It seems to have 4 shocks in the front and 2 in the rear...is this normal?
Also it has some sort of spreader clamp in the front coil springs...how do I tell if it has a "lift" and how much lift in order to buy shocks...?
Any help/guidance is really appreciated
Thank you
Gerard
a few weeks ago I lifted a cj5, not the same but close enough for this purpose. after lifting the truck to the desired height I placed a jack underneat the driver side of the axle and raised the jack until the driver side was at full compression or just before the tire hits the fender. I first measured the distance between the upper and lower shock mount on the driver side. This gives you the compressed length. Say for example 11" Then I went to the passenger side and measured from shock mount to shock mount and that gave me my extended length. Lets say 17" I went to my local napa and asked for shocks that have an extened length of 17" and a compressed length of 11" They punched it in their computer and found some that were alittle shorter (about a 1/2 inch) than I wanted but for 16.95 each I couldnt turn them down.
hope this helps and isnt too confusing
