Surly this has been talked about. I have a 99 V-10 with 287000 and the check engine light came on. I had the code checked and it was a exhaust gas low flow. 040 trouble code. Auto Zone said change the EGR valve. I did that and the light came on in about 60 miles. I went back and they said to clean the port where the valve mounts, with carb cleaner. I did that and the code came back on at 60 miles. The valve is working when I check it off the truck. Any body got any suggestions on how to fix this.
EGR related DTCs P0400 - P0402, very rarely have anything to do with the EGR valve itself. These codes are very commonly generated by a defective EGR differential pressure sensor.
I was looking over the guys shoulder when he took the reading, So my code number may not be right. Where is the EGR Differential pressure sensor. Is it the sensor mounted next to the carb intake infront of the EGR valve itself? This sensor has two hoses going to the EGR flow tub from the exhaust manifold. Will this be a dealer item or can it be bought at a parts store?

Yep! It's rectangular; about 4"x3"x3/4". They can be in different locations, depending upon the vehicle. On the 99 V10, they are usually located just over spark plugs #7 and #8.
Ford Dealers ALWAYS keep a good supply of these on hand!

If you are looking at the front of the truck the EGR valve itself is on the right side of the intake. The DPFE is kitty corner of the EGR valve toward the airbox in the front right. There's a plug for the computer and two small rubber lines coming off of it that hook into the EGR tube that goes to the driver's side exhaust manifold. Good luck. The updated DPFE's were installed in 2000 supposedly, mine has been fine since it was replaced.
Thanks for all the help. You were right. It was the EGR sensor. I changed It last weekend and the lite has not come back on since. Thanks for all your help.
