Is it possible to drop in a larger engine into this vechicle? And if so, what kind? 5.0 V8? How much faster do you think the Explorer will be? And also what other mods would you have to do in order to handle the extra horsepower?
I'll jump in since no one else has.
Everytime I climb under mine to change the oil, I think of a 5.0 swap. The motor mount holes are already there, and I think everything would be a bolt-on. You'd just about have to have a donor vehicle, though. The 8.8" rear diff is plenty strong, so that's no problem. As are the brakes. The torsion bars might have to be changed, and maybe the driveshaft, but other than that, it should be a straight forward swap.
Thanks for the reply. What about the tranny though? There is no way a stock one will hold up is there? Especially if I get a crate engine, 5.0 v8 345hp.
None of the 4.0 transmissions will bolt up to a 5.0. Best bet would be to get a 5.0 Explorer donor, and exchange the engine and transmission as a unit, or at least use the transmission with the crate engine. You'll also need the PCM and various other electricals.
