Shift Motor

Sorry for not doing a thorough search guys, but I picked up a 1993 Explorer 4x4 and was aware that the 4x4 would not engage (hearing a little sound similar to a diesel engine when trying to engage). I searched through this site and noticed quite a few remarks about the shift motor. Can someone enlighten me on where exactly this motor is located? (I will get a manual, but my curiosity may get the best of me before I pick one up).
