i just bought a 91 explorer for my first nehicle to drive back and forth to school, i know quite a bit about cars, but i have heard you guys talking, and what is the correct way to engage and disengage the 4 wheel drive in these things, we have always had the lever to push and pull, and it seemed to work better than the buttons, so let me know how to do this!
The push button 4X4 system is pretty easy to use. To engage 4X4 High, press the top button (4X4). This can be done at any speed though it is better to engage it when you are going slow or are stopped. The red light next to it will light up as well as "4X4" on the instrument panel. To engage 4X4 Low, do the above step first. Then come to a complete stop and shift into neutral. Press the "Low Range" button. The red light next to it will light up (in addition to the other light) and "Low Range" will light up on the instrument panel.
The system always worked good on my 92 X. Just be sure not to use it on dry road because it will damage the system. Also, when engaged and making a turn, you may notice a weird feeling (hard to describe), this is the normal. It is the front wheel turning at a different rate than the rear ones I believe.
It is always a good idea to back up after disengaging your 4 wheel drive to ensure that the hubs unlock. My Explorer and my Jeep both have shift on the fly but the hubs rarely disengage without backing up. Just good practice, in my book...
