Can someone give me some insight here. Here is the skinny.87 F150 4x4,300 I6 auto,New starter,New solenoid,New positive battery cable(bat to sol),new ground cable(bat to frame rail),new battery.Go to crank it and it fires right up but about 50% of the time the solenoid sticks and keeps the starter going.Until recently we tapped on it or slapped the fender and it would break the contacts loose.well, today it stuck hard and wouldn't let go.Wasn't fast enough on disconnecting the battery so we had to replace the starter and buy another solenoid(went though about 6 in the past month) and went ahead and replaced the 2 battery cables.Any ideas what else we can do to fix this dang thing? The Starter is a Ford Reman from Advanced Auto and the Solenoid is a new GP brand jobber also from AA.
The solonoid that these trucks use is very prone to sticking - mine does it some times as well. My mechanic friend suggested getting one for and old mustang or something (with the posts on opposite sides instead of side by side on the top) because they were better for some reason. Maybe give that a try next time you go buy one. I know how you feel when it sticks, and hopefully you can get this resolved.
the ground cable should also ground to the engine block , not just the frame.
and the grounds where the solenoid is mounted should also be checked.
is the solenoid mounted on a plastic inner fender, ( with a seperate ground wire ?) or on the fender it self? fender I hope.
next would be a very close inspection of the ignition switch, as it may be miss aligned or worn out,and not completely returning to the run position.
sometimes when a battery is extremely low on charge , the solenoid will not release either.

This is the first thing I would check. Maybe even hook up a light to the wire between the ignition switch and the solenoid so you can see if it is releasing.
thanks guys,Found out it was the Cheap pos GP brand Solenoid from advanced auto.Replaced it with a Borg Warner from the Leaping Leprechons(O'Reillys) and it fixed it.We also replaced the wire from the Solenoid to the starter itself but the old one looked good and didn't have any crunching noises when I bent the wire.
