I went out to an auction today and bought 80 plus ' of 2" X 10'6" galvanized with .250" walls...round stock...Im looking to built a heavy Duty Engine stand.. I might have paid to much for it.... but when I built my satellite pole for my 10' dish..I paid $45 for an 8 ' length of #40..thats 5 bucks a foot?
No special plans.. but, you will have to grind the galv. off before welding . Make sure you weld outside, maybe even with a fan blowing on you..zinc ifumes are "hazzardous to your health" and downright poisonous. Good luck, George Maybe we can hook up when I get back to Stuart
Yeah, if you're welding it, and smell something that smells like onions, STOP WELDING! You can get majorly sick off that, and not even realize until it's too late. It starts out with just a dry mouth, then maybe a sore throat, the next day you will think you have a cold or the flu, then you will most likely be in bed for at least two days, but then you will be fine. I have had this happen, and it sucks.
Well guys thanks for the heads up on welding with the galv. Ya George maybe we can do that im up here between Rocky Mt. and Smith Mountain Lake... Russ
That pipe may be useful to have but its not good stock for an engine stand. Structural shapes are better and way more efficient to fabricate. Look at some pics of commercial stands and copy some ideas.
