would like to know everyones opion on parts for the 390, like intake manifold, timeing chain and headers, mine runs good but want a little more from it.
The concensus around here seems to be performer rpm manifold, 4bbl carb, Any old headers MADDOG timing chain...(russ) , Crane cams. Thats the direction you should look into i would assume.
I have this setup, so I always recommend it. Has for years worked great for me and my needs. The Edelbrock Performance Package. That includes the intake, 600 cfm carb, cam w/lifters, valve springs, timing chain, and aluminum water pump. http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/index.html
Now lets not forget the exhaust. For a 390...you could run a single 3" exhaust or a dual 2.5" exhaust. If you want a larger pipe with duals, then you will probably have to switch to the larger 750 carb. www.flowmastermufflers.com
Just my .02. With all this said, this is the best form to get your answers on any FE question. So good luck with your setup.
with a hotter cam, intake, headers, i would go bigger than a 600 on the 390 but the smaller carb would have more "crisp" acceleration. Biggest mod is electronic ignition!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For a 390--- the best intake is the Factory medium rise 427/428 PI intake or the older Edelbrock F427 ( in my opinion) Headers in a pickup? Why spend $400+dollars when a $100 set will do ? Cam? Many great choices there, just depends on what you want out of the motor. Crane's not the only choice in my opinion, many others out there too.

Agreed, the 600cfm carb has very "crisp" acceleration. On my application the truck seems like it is EFI.
I have always hade morecrisp acceleration with a carb than efi.....EFI laggs to much you cant pop the throttle and get instant gratification it always sucks air then revs.

Hey, I've got EFI on my 360. There is absolutely NO lag when you get it tuned right. The only difference is the gas mileage.
Well the only efi i have had was different that yours of course I had 88 5.0 mustang and i have a 92 f-150 with a 351 and i just hate the 1 second delay when i tap the throttle....they run great and are strong but i have always loved the carb..

Do you mind explaining what you mean by, "The only difference is the gas mileage" ? Are you getting better mpg's?...before EFI and after EFI comparison...
Hey Baddad 457 I've a question for ya; I've got a Edelbrock F-427 (stock) and thinking about getting a Sidewinder, is there any performance difference between the two and if so were in the rpm's? They will go on my 410 that has 427 LR heads with a 270/290 CJ cam at 2 1/2 degree advance, 670 Holley and Thorley headers 2 1/2" pipes with Edel RPM mufflers, C6 with low stall converter, 3.54 gear with 33" tall tires. I must play with the 410 before going to 482 CI FE. Thanks, Carl.................o&o>..................
