Ranger A4LD overheating?
I have a 1996 Ranger 3.0 auto. I've had it for over a year and the tranny has never given me any problems, but a few weeks ago, I was driving home and i saw huge billows of smoke behind me. Pulled it into my yard and saw atf dripping onto my exhaust. I figured it was a blown seal, but I let it sit for a week, checked where it was leaking, and it was dry. Drove it around the block, and no leak. Shifted fine too. Checked fluid level, and it was fine. No more problems until yesterday when it began leaking again. I figured that the tranny was overheating and blowing out the excess fluid, but yesterday, the tranny basically emptied itself out. It wouldn't even shift into gear this morning.
So is this a cooling issue (both times I was city driving in 90+ deg.for a few hours, but no towing either time) or is there a blown seal? Thank you for any help you can give.
