Need trans help!!!

I have a 1999 f150 4x4 5.4 with the automatic trans. When I give it gas I hear a sound (sounds like a saw from a distance) This sound starts a half a second after I hit the gas and lasts about two seconds after the gas is let up. This happens in all gears. The trans fluid is clean and it shifts good. No sounds in neutral or park... Any thoughts on this will help.... thanks,.... this site rocks!

How does power feel? Sluggish or any hesitations? I am not sure what would make a saw noise inside a tranny but that can't be good. Does it change with engine speed or road speed? Is there a time when it is really noticable like on shifts?

Maybe if you are lucky, it is actually something on the chassis or drive train causing the noise.

I have had occassions with various cars I owned where it would buzz, clunk rattle and make metalic ringing sounds kind of like a circular saw makes sometimes. It usually turned out to be loose heat shield on the exhaust, loose muffler hangers, loose rock shields, running boards that were loose or rubbing against something else when the truck flexes a bit under load.

I would get under the truck with a good strong light, not a cheesy flash lite. Look at all the hangers and shields etc. Wiggle things around. Also look at the drive shaft to see if anything is stuck to it. Might luck out and just have to tighten something up.

Last metalic rattling I had only came under light load or while idling in neutral. Turned out to be one of the heat shields on the hump going over the axle. All it took was a 50cent hose clamp to fix. Hope you got a similar problem and fix.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
