My 87 Ranger 2.3L, automatic (A4LD) transmission has a leak.
A week ago, I took the truck into the shop to get all the oil leaks fixed (I had considered a new engine, but the cost was prohibitive, $3500 installed for a Jasper, $1300 more than I estimated), and so I had the oil pan gasket replaced, front and rear main seals (with 'seal saver kits'), transmission seals and gaskets, and a new pair of "Super Springs" (man, these are the closest thing to pefect I've ever experienced too!!).
2 days later, I noticed tranny fluid in the driveway, saw it was the tailshaft seal, called, they asked to have me bring back in, and installed a new bushing and tailshaft seal.
2 more days later, same thing, took it back yesterday, this time they pulled the complete tail piece housing, and installed a new bushing and seal again, reinstalled.
This morning, drippage again at the tailshaft seal. I did not contact them back yet, hoping I could figure out what might be wrong first.
Driveshaft is balanced, new universal joints were installed (both about a year 1/2 ago), and upon their inspection (the repair shop as of yesterday), there is no scouring, gouging, defects or other visible problems otherwise.
Is the driveshaft sealing surface smooth? Sometimes they will wear a small groove into the seal mating surface. If so, you can maybe polish out the groove but usually just repositioning the seal 1/8" or so will solve that problem. If there is a groove (doesn't take much) they should have seen it.
