Shifting

P.S. Racing should only be done at a race track using proper safety equipment. I have been awakened by my pager many times in the middle of the night help scrape what's left of 'racers' and their vehicles off the pavement.

Shifting

I've only heard of double clutching in reference to big trucks. I agree that it is only necessary in non-syncronized transmissions. In the light truck transmission of today that are syncronized I could shift into any gear at any speed with the clutch depressed. I've always understood double clutching to include depressing the clutch pedal twice. (depress clutch, shift to neutral, release clutch, blip throttle, depress clutch, complete shift.)

I understand power shifting to be a drag racing practice of shifting as quickly as possible without depressing the clutch. (after the initial release of the clutch to start the car in first gear) So you stage at the starting line. Light goes green, release the clutch, mat the throttle, at shift point release throttle and pull on shifter to second, mat the throttle etc. You can see how this would scatter transmission parts after a short while.

For a challenge I used to see if I could upshift and downshift without using the clutch. It is possible to do without putting as much strain on the tranny as powershifting. You adjust the throttle position to relese tension on the gear your in and then you can move the shift lever. Once in neutral release the throttle and as the input shaft of the trans decelerates it will allow the synchros of the next gear to line up and you can engage the next gear.
