When an insureance company concludes that a vehicle is totalled, if you buy it back from them, is it legal to re-register it after being fixed? The kid who hit me wants to fix his car back with his dad, idiot.

It depends with your state/province. What you should do is call the department of motor vehicles.
In my case (Quebec, Canada) if the insurance writes it off, the truck would need to pass two tests, one mechanical and another for the body. You'd need to keep a record with photos along with all the bills during the rebuild. It's a PITA and not worth doing.
In Texas you can only get a salvaged title after it has been totaled. I don't know if there is a provision to have it inspected and re-titled so that the salvage stigma ever disappears.
I bought back my 92 Mustang which was broadsided at a red light (my wife was criusing through an already green lite and a girl adimtted to running the red because she was not paying attention.
It totalled the car. I bought it back for parts. They told me (the insurance company) that I could not put it back on the highway. I am not sure if that was true. If I only knew then what I know now, I would have kept all the parts for myself. I bought a 96, didn't like it, sold it, and bought another 92, which is much inferior inside than my original one. Too bad about 2 years had past before I realized I needed it. I did keep the engine and all accessories, which I installed in my 54 F100, including cruise, etc.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-May-02 AT 04:19 PM (EST)]Mine got hit while it was sitting in my driveway. Lady in a Bronco hit the pass side and then pushed my truck into my double-wide (hey I was in CA and that was living large ). She crushed the bed (no frame damage), knocked over an Italian Cypress tree, and knocked the trailer off the foundation. Her insurance wanted to total my truck 'cause it had original paint and ratty interior. I wouldn't accept the deal. We worked out an arrangement-- total value less the cost for me to buy it back, they didn't total the truck, and I had to sign a waiver saying that was the end of their liability for the truck. Then I said "Now let's talk about my $3000 tree!" Got a new bed and paint job and still driving that truck.
in manitoba if it's declaired a "parts only" it can never be re-registered on any roads. If it's non parts only it's repairable and can be re-register after it has passed a safety inspection. These right-offs are sold at the mpi auction sales every wendensday. after you buy the cars you can do w/e you want to them. heck, most cars don't even come with keys!
In MS there's a couple of inspections that have to take place, I believe on body and engine/drivetrain. That and a $75 fee for the inspection. They gotta get theirs, ya know! It IS possible, with the inspections and the fee, to get the word "salvage" off your title.
In WA, you get a State Patrol inspection, that primarily consists of them looking up the VIN and making sure it's not stolen parts. I know a guy who passed even though he didn't have catalytic converters or rear brakes. Then you go to the Department of Licensing and tell them what's going on. They charge a rediculous fee ($185ish) and give you a new registration. That's it. The hardest part is sitting in line for the S.P. inspection.

You think that's bad here in Quebec (most taxed people in North America) it costs us 235 bucks a year per vehicle for registration. That's why I'm moving to Ontario soon.
I see you have a gibson exhaust on your truck, how does it sound? Did it give it anything like a v-8 tone and do you have your cat and resignator still on, if not did it make a big difference in power and sound?
