Question Replacing E4OD

I am looking to replace the 4 sped automatic transmission (E4OD) in my 1991 F250 460cu 4wd gasoline truck. I have been told that I cannot use any E4OD tranny. The only numbers I can find on my transmission are "RF FOTP 7006 AA" and they are molded into the case. I have located a couple of replacement transmissions, but how can I determine if they will work in my truck. Also, will the same transmission fit both 2wd and 4wd trucks?

Thanks for your help!

If an E40D came out of your truck, another E40D can go right back in it. Just make sure it has all the upgrades of the later E40D's.

A 2wd and 4wd transmission are not interchangeable.

Oh - that's bad! I can't bolt my transfer case to the back of the 2wd transmission?

I misread it. I thought he was told that he couldn't put another E40D in it. Yes, if it is 4x4 you can only use a E40D 4x4 trans.

The 2wd trans has no way to mount the TC to it. You might be able to change the output shaft but I'm not sure. This thread has to go to the tranny forum....I'll move it in a few minutes.

Is there not a way to take the tailshaft section out of a 4x2 for the TC to fit? I thought it was just a cover piece (end of casing) and a tailshaft extension (with a bearing on front and rear for the 4x2's, and those things could be taken out for a TC to fit.

Maybe this calls for a under truck adventure! Wonder if that will clear things up some?

The change between 4x2 and 4x4 you need to change the extension housing and the output shaft. Both can be changed, but to change the output shaft it has to come out of the front of the transmission. Every other part in the transmission needs to come out first!

So i found myself in this situation recently, as in i'm still getting everything connected... 4x4 e40d in 1997 f250 hd 460 failed, shop wanted $4K and a month to get it done, while preparing myself for worst i started looking for trucks, either to replace mine or to pull a matching tranny out... well I found a 1995 e-350 24' Class C Motorhome with a E40d transmission and a 460 that only had 100k miles on it, price was $1800 bucks... went to look at it, took code scanner for eec-iv, didnt even look at RV other than to make sure it was road worthy to get it home... I was so proud of myself.. until i realized that the out put shaft was different and would require rebuilding transmission anyway to make it work.. well now i was really *****ed, because i just spent 1800 bucks i had to borrow, and my truck still didnt work.. After some contemplation about tearing the RV aftermarket body off the econoline chassis and making a MONSTER flatbed, I decided that would take to long and cost to much, despite how fun it would be, and after considering my options, I decided to cut the drive shaft after it comes out of the rear of the 2wd e40d from the motorhome and weld it to the drive shaft thats in my f250hd, with a 1/4" wall sleeved portion of pipe over the weld seam, which is made possible by the extra space between trans and rear drive shaft due to the transfer case no longer being needed.. soo assuming the wiring works out, and no issues arise as a result of the Dana 50 front axle no longer having a drive shaft connected to it, in a pinch its going to have to work, and I still have all the fun ***** that came with the RV like the 4000 watt onboard generator, an extra 460 motor with only 100k miles on it, and a dually rear diff and wheel set, as well as a I-beam front suspension with coils if I ever get absolutely sick of the leaf spring set up on my Dana 50 for the f250
