Hey, I just recently bought a 73 f 250 camper special (2wd) with a 390 in it. I've been looking to get some more power out of it such as a 4 barrel carb and intake and a different cam. Will parts off an older 390 work on the 73? I just bought some headers for it. I'm 17 years old and am new to driving this old of truck what exactly does the "FE" mean that I see alot of people talking about?? thanks for any help.

Well Adam.... Lets start off with what you plan on doing with the truck?
Camping,Hauling.Off roading, pulling, pushing, Or just stop light to stop light runs with your foot to the bellhousing?
And second How much HP are you wanting get? That all depends on How deep your wallet is?There a bunch of good guys/gals in this forum...and very informative..what one guy might not know, another one will..
On the performance end there are guys in here with just stock rebuilds and some of the guys have $2000 to $5000 into a performance build and some others have $10,000 to $15,000 in there motors...Range in HP from about 250HP to 600HP+... So as you can see we run the whole gamet....

if your looking to just livin the ol rig up i would get the ededlbrock rpm intake, holley 600 vac sec carb, and a mild cam like a crane 902 or a comp 268. i'd go as far as an electronic ignition, if it doesn't have one. jmho, matt

I have a '73 F100 2wd with a stock 390. I installed a 4v cast iron intake off a mid 60's car 390, a 600 cfm Edelbrock, Dynomax headers and 2 1/4" dual exhaust - these mods made a huge difference in the performance.
I also installed a '76 Ford Duraspark II factory electronic ignition with big dist cap, thicker plug wires and MSD blaster 2 coil. I went for electronic ignition to eliminate the points, I got tired of messing with them.
My plan is to run it like this until I need a rebuild. Then I will up the compression and get a better cam - no sense tearing into a good engine - especially when I'm on a tight budget...
FE is the name of the engine family that includes 332, 352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428 engines. These are all from a similar cast block and most parts are interchangeable. FE stands for Ford Edsel, the one that designed this engine.
thanks for the info. I would like to get 250 to 300 hp when i'm all done, I found what the specs are for hp and torque. according to the chiltons manual for trucks from 1971 to 1978 the hp for a 73 390 is 195@4400 rpm and the torque is 319 @2400. this truck is my everyday driver and i will only be pulling snowmobile trailers in the winter. I also want to increase the torque too. I thought a 390 would have more power than what the specs say.
I had a 390 in my 73. I had an edelbrock performer manifold, holley 600 vacume secondary carb, 75 model duraspark distributor, msd ignition module, dual 2 1/2" pipes with flowmasters. It ran realy good, sounded better, and got 14 mpg.
the horse power is a bit low but they make up for it with the torque. the torque is what gets you going. with a little mods though you can tweek your 390 nicely.
