Question need some advice

Well, i was on my way home from work and at a stop light 1st and 2nd gear decided to take a crap on me (no grinding) and they wouldnt engage, truck just revved. 3rd 4th 5th and reverse worked fine so i was able to get it home. Got the transmission, transfer case, blah blah blah all that stuff out and my dads mechanic came to look at it. He told me that it would only be worth it if i had it totally rebuilt, or just get one from a junkyard. What should i do? Either way im thinkin its gonna cost me quite a bit... Would any other transmission work? (1994 F150, 4.9, M5OD tranny) From what ive been reading the ZF 5 speed is better/stronger. Help is much appreciated.

When I was looking at this I found a T-18 would work. Try doing a search on the Transmission forum.

I have heard it is stronger and better. One of the MAIN reasons that the M5OD fails is that people don't check the fluid. It gets a little low (from a leak) and then you burn out your gears. If you keep the fluid topped up you should be fine. At least that's what I have heard....

the ZF is a HD manual tranny and is 10x better then the M5OD. but if u dont plan on really abusing it, the M5OD will be fine and give u added OD. the ZF is harder to find (onlu used in 1/2 tons for 88?) and its also expensive.

Well i looked at some used M5OD's and they are 500-600 for a used non-rebuilt one around me. I took it to a tranny shop just for the heck of it and they said pretty much the same as the mechanic, it needs a rebuild. Im havin them do it proffessionaly for me, gonna cost about 750 for labor and rebuilid kit/parts.
