You need to be more specific on the fault code.
Most likely your problem is one of the O2 sensors. On some vehicles, there is one before and one after the cat, and possibly another pair on other side of the engine also (left/right bank).
Give us the specific codes and I am sure someone can help. Also, a $20 investment in a Haynes manual for your Explorer will explaina lot and be well worth the money down the road.
You do have an O2 sensor before and after the catalytic converter. If you have the base OHV 4.0L, then you have 3 O2 sensors, one on each exhaust manifold, and one between the last cat and muffler. If you have the SOHC or V8 then you have 4 O2 sensors, one on each exhaust manifold and one between each cat and muffler. If an O2 sensor goes out, your computer can think that the cat is the reason for the code. Usually it is one of the downstream sensors that is the cause. However if the cat is bad, it will also set a code. Be advised though that if it is the cat, it is waranteed for 8 years/80K miles. O2 sensors usually start failing around 60K miles (although all 4 of mine have 92K miles and work fine). Catalytic converters should last at least 80K miles, but every once in a while they do fail early.
I have a 1998 with 26 K miles on it and it has the
check engine light lite on and it goes out when it
feels like it. The manual says it is connected with
the fuel system i.e. water in the gas and I notice that
it is next to the fuel door open sign but do not know
if it is related to that.
Am still trying to resolve the same problem and that is
why I am on this fourm.
