ok so i just took a trip to my local muffler shop to see what kind of exhaust i have on my truck cause i bought it with an exhaust system already on it and i wasnt sure what it was. they informed me that i have a glasspack cherry bomb muffler and said that was the loudest my truck could possibly be. i asked them if a flowmaster muffelr would make any difference and they said it might make it a little deeper but not any louder. so they then suggested that they could cut off my catalytic converters and i guess run straight pipes for 200 dollars (why in the hell do i have 4 catalytic converters) and it would be alot louder. but i am worried about doing that because in turn im pretty sure my check engine light would be on constantly and i dont think that would be very safe. im not worried about the environment or emmissions control or anything i just dont wanna have my check engine light on and just think its because of haveng no catalytic converters when something might actually be wrong with my truck. they told me i could buy some kind of plugs on ebay that the sensors on my cats go to and it owuldnt make my check engine light come on. does anyone know where i can find these so called plugs? or just does anyone have any info on why i shouldnt do this before i go and cut off my catalytic converters?
Depending on where you live, you could get in serious trouble. Unless you just blame the muffler shop. Tell the cops they said it was okay.
Anyhow, the plugs are called MIL's, do a search on Google or eBay for MIL's. I think places like Jeg's have them too. They are like 20 bucks or something.
it wouldn't hurt your truck any, it would make it flow tons more. Are you cutting off all 4 or just the 2 precats?
It would definitely sound louder and meaner. I've been wanting to cut all 4 off and weld in 2 high-flows, but these damned CA emissions ****'s are screwing up my plans.
If your afraid it'll hurt your car, think about this. Flip through a mustang mag or go to mustang site. Hell, any car that has a high abundance of aftermarket parts. You'll see lots of off-road pipes, like x-pipes or h-pipes, with no cats. Before 1973 (1974 starting this january), cars didn't even need to have cats.
well i dont need to worry about emmissions control police where i live theyre pretty damn stupid. i guess im just trying to get that v8 sound so i can trick some people than beat them with my v6. that would be awesome
That would also work on the 4.6L V8 f-150 but you dont have one of those either. But I like this thread..I would like to get my cats cut too but am debating whether it would take engine life away from my engine or not. I know it messes up your computer but..??? would it do nething if I got those MIL's?
It'll never sound like a V8. that's the never ending question in this forum. I still wonder how to get it to rumble like that, and Sigma had the best answer.
You see, our trucks are even-firing, and will never get the staggered "boog boog boog boog" of a V8.
I'd like to get my cats cut though and get glasspacks. So I would have like 2.25 inch piping with glasspacks...and large diameter tips out the back-probably 4 inchs
I wonder how much of a difference would be made.. from my setup now...with just my muffler cut off to a future setup with no cats no muffler and glasspacks
