Hello again,
I tried to purchase a rebuilt distributor today. Apparently I need to know
if I have a cast iron gear or a steel gear. They are not interchangeable. I gave the parts guy the # off distributor. E4ZE-12131-AA. He said it wasn't in his book. As the dealer is closed I thought I might ask here. I have a 1990 Full Size 302 EFI, 5 Speed Manual.
I came across this problem a little while back on my rig. I replaced the motor and used my old dizzy, but shortly thereafter I could stand on the accel. and it would whine/squeak/howl. I finally figured out that my dizzy gear was being eaten by the new cam gear. It's my understanding that steel is harder than iron so your cam and dizzy need to of the same material. I guess my old one was iron and the new cam was steel. I got the steel gear as the guy at the parts store said steel was the most common. I pulled the dizzy about 6-8 weeks later to see if there was any wear and it looked good. I still need to pull it again just to triple check, but I think/hope all is right. As far as the part not being in the catalog, not all that surprising, neither was mine. I just took mine down and we matched it up. Even pulled the module off right there at the counter and gave them my old for the core charge.
