Right now my truck. a f350superduty automatic 4x4 crew cab long box dually equipped with a 7.3 powestroke is bone stock. Would a superchip 1705 be a good first mod or should I start somewhere else. Also is there any problem with towing with this application.
Thanks for any help,
High-Tide
high-tide I'd start with a guage set for monitoring egt's, tranny temp, and boost. Then get you a open element air intake like a Tymar, then a 3.5" downpipe and get rid of or gut the cat. Then go for power mods. This way you can "see" what the engine and tranny are doing before you roast them especially if you plan on towing. Just my .02
Hightide, that is how I started my mods to my '95 F250 PSD. I went straight to the 80 hp setting on the 1705. What a difference! Did not tow or haul anything heavy. I soon after added the 3" DP and 4" exhaust {minus the cat of course} and that made it much better too. I just put a "Tymar" style open element intake set up and it picked up again. I have purchased the Diablo firm shift valve {from Motorhaven} but haven't put it in yet.
I would not wait too long to do the exhaust upgrade, at least the DP and cat delete part. That would be the best way to get the most from the 1705 upgrade. Simple old hot-rodding rules apply here too, if you want to make more power, open up the breathing on both ends of the engine!
Gauges are a MINUMIM first before you get a tuner. There's nothing wrong with the SCMT - that's what I started with on my truck. It certainly does wake the PSD up!! Really you should do gauges, intake, and better flowing downpipe and exhaust before you start with fueling enhancemants - but you could get away with just gauges for a while if you watch them, especially EGT's, real close. You'll be able to get a lot more out of the tuner, especially safe towing power, if you do the other upgrades.
how many guys on here have done a chip or tuner with 'higher' mileage
psd??? I have a 7.3 psd with 110K--would it be too much on motor/tranny
to do chip/tuner for a little hp gain?
