Sorry, posted this over in the super-duty fourm. Should be here I suppose...
Damn, I think my front axle seal is shot on my 01 f-250 7.3 4x4 cc. 61k. I was greasing the steering stuff when I noticed gear oil weeping out the outer axle seal by the knuckle on the right side (sitting in the truck). Long tube. Anyway, the axle is supposed to be dry. There are seals at the differential that hold the gear oil in, so I guess if I have gear oil in the axle, than the seal at the differential must be shot.
Anyway, I'm going to have my mechanic fix it, but I recently had the outer axle seal replaced and he had a time finding the right p/n. I want to just give it to him if I can. Anyone know the part number of that seal I need to replace (@ the differential)? I know its a Dana 50 axle. the s/n is 6110711036108. The Cust. p/n is 1c34-3002 JA. I looked up the Bill of Material number on the Dana site, and they listed it as 61194-1. Dunno, I couldn't find it on the axle.
As far as cause, I was riding around with the front right hub locked for prolly 5k. I don't know how only one side was locked and not the other. Would that cause the seal to crap out? Alot of the miles were highway, at 70 or so. Is driving around with one shaft locked up bad in general?
Lots of questions I know, sorry. Nice to be back and posting again.

Oh lastly, everything is unlocked now. Front driveshaft not turning. Is it ok to ride around for now until its fixed?
Hey folks. So how hard is it to replace these seals? Apparantly the whole differential has to come out, both axles, remove leaf springs, etc? I just got a call from my mechanic. Ford sent over the wrong seal and he is wondering if this is a job for him. Keep in mind this a neighbor of mine. I do not like the idea of getting fleeced by ford for this job. How much will this cost me?
Again, this is an 01 f250 4x4 with leaking front differental as evidenced by gear oil coming out the axle tube seal on the passanger side.
And also, is it bad to ride around w/o hubs locked and in 2wd?
I'm not familiar with the TTB setups but I can tell you it sounds like it requires the same thing as my solid Dana 60 does: pull the axles, pull the carrier etc. It's a nightmare and is not something I would trust to a mechanic who isn't familiar with them. I'd imagine if all the same shims are used the carrier would just go right into place but if not then you'll have to have dial indicators and all that to get them set just right again. Otherwise you'll burn up your gears and have to do it all over again. It's a pretty labor intensive job. My guess is a shop would charge about $500-$600 in labor.
Well, got my truck back (with nice new tires) but not the differential work. He's too busy right now, so next week. Gonna end up costing round 1k (hey, I live in the Hamptons) he says. All for a 35$ friggin part.
