steven you are a very lucky guy to have an A4LD last that long. ive got 70k on my 2000 and i think it may last til 100k
Well, it's not totally dead yet either! We still drive it when we have the time to get stranded (just in case it totally fails). Still making 18 to 20 mpg on the highway too. I'm hoping to get another 5000 miles out of it so I can save the up the $$ to rebuild it myself...
In talking with long-time Ford mechanics, it sounds like the newer trannies are even weaker, the 4R44E and 5R55E are worse than A4LD... One of my friends bought an expy V-8 just to get away from poor transmission - his has AODE...
96 5.0L AWD Eddie B. The odometer stopped working about a year and a half ago 168,500. I estimate the mileage at about 200,000 plus. Engine still runs strong, control arms need replacing.
i flushed every liquid in that car too. it runs like a top. but something bothers me about my trans. it was lagging just a bit off the stop every red light and i figuerd with 30k on the fluid it needs changing. i changed it with Mobil 1 ATF Synthetic, made sure it was the right kind first, of course. its run really good ever since but i think the properties in that fluid kind of make it a little "rubbery" if you know what i mean. i had to overtake yesterday and i floored it, passing 5 or 6 cars doing 90. i put the brakes on a bit and it made a little noise as it was downshifting and it felt kidn of mushy. maybe im overreacting but just little things like that make me wonder
we have 165k on our 94 explorer w/ 4.0 only thing replaced was the tranny
thing will never die. its already gone through my parents, my older brother and me, and im sure it will keep going on to my little brother who gets his license sometime this year! too many good memories lol
Wow this makes me feel better about the 98 xplorer 4.0 SOHC I have w/ 70K. Looks like my tranny could be the first major problem at about 90K according some of the posts. I have never replaced the Transmission Fluid and I tow a boat 4 times a month.
Should I replace the fluid? Where and how much is the damage? Jiffy lube quoted me 89 bucks using a special pump to flush it out.
Only other trouble......the driver side door latch broke a spring. I replaced the whole latch myself for 37.00. Tough job though. I can give instructions apon request.
My '92 4.0L Explorer XLT 4x4 has 230,000 miles. Rebuilt the 5-speed at 140,000 and just replaced the engine at 227,000 after burning an exhaust valve. The engine is/was the best thing on it; everything else had failed at least once (A/C and front hubs are particularly troublesome).
I got ya'll beat 315,000 on my 1991 exp w/ auto & 4wd. I have had to replace almost everything in the A/C but to the best of my knowledge the engine & trans are original. I bought it used but the original owner told me he had no problems.
