here we go again...is the stuff worth the money????been using 10w30 in my explorer. I used to do it myself, but got lazy and now i go wherever theres a sale. is there any advantage to switching to a synthetic??
Depends on how often you change your oil. The systhetics were designed for extreme duty and extended intervals. I never saw any real advantage especially considering the price difference. I try to always change my oil at 3K mile intervals and my Explorer engine has over 200K original miles without a teardown using only Penzoil HD30 thruout its life.
Changing a synthetic every 3K miles would cost you a small fortune over the life of the vehicle. Extending that to 7-10K miles means taking a chance on early engine failure. Is it worth the risk? I do not think so.
Oil is cheap compared to engine work.

i have a '95 X with 102K and have been using a synth blend for the past 3 years - changed every 3k - no problems
i am now considering one of those max-life products now.
either way keep it fresh and all should go well
I've been using Mobil 1 for about 25 years. I use the red label 15W50 in my 95' XLT. I always change the oil every 12 months and put about 20 to 25 thousand miles (filter too).
I alway change my own oil and its usually pretty black, but I've never had engine wear problems. Note: All my engines were in excellent condition when started them on Mobil 1.
High cost per quart is a bargain to me, considering the alternative (standard oil at every 3,000 miles).
