Any one ever fabricated a cold air intake for one of these trucks? My application is a 76 F260 4x4 with a 460. All the newer rigs out have kits to do this so it must work. It seemed to help my 93 T-Bird SC.
My OPINION on them are, unless the factory airbox is poorly designed, like on the '99 SD PSD, the cold air intakes are no better than the factory setup. Using the factory airfilter housing with the factory duct is about as good as it gets. I think Torque 1st went as far as adding a second duct system the the factory filter housing. With a modded motor, I could see that as a good addition.
Well I guess I have never seen a completely stock setup for one of these. Was there a duct of some kind to bring in cold air from outside the engine compartment?
Actually, it was available but not installed on MANY trucks from 73-79. I'm thinking of 390 equipped trucks specifically. I've owned 2 and neither had a cold air intake. Look between the battery and the radiator. There is a plate bolted over the hole used for the cold air intake. There is a plastic elbow that bolts over the hole that the flexible hose connects to the air cleaner.
i think there may be pic in my gallery, but i made a cold air set-up, using a cone filter, and some 4" intake piping. i've still gotta box in the filter though...
I modified that plastic elbow to provide a straight shot to my snorkel and also make the tube straighter. Less wrinkles means cleaner airflow.
I started seeing those cold air intakes on vehicles back in the late 60's but I don't remember what brands or engines they were on. They were obviously shown to be a good idea They weren't on everything tho... There should be a few pieces left in the salvage yards.
We used to fabricate our own back then for performance. They were not sophisticated and had no temp controls. I modify the temp controls on mine to run with about 70F air.
Those old threads here have details about filter housings to use and how to modify the controls.

I like it... very clean looking. What did you use on the carb end?
I found the cold air setup - plastic box which attaches to the rad support, and flexible hose - on a junkyard '77. However, the hose is round and the snorkel on my '74 is rectangular. How do I mate the two?
Eric
73 custom,
i use a part of 4" truck intake that i had laying around from plumbing a cat genset, and made the part that sits on the carb out of 14ga mild steel, with a 1/4" square band rolled to fit the gasket on the carb.
You can buy various configurations of air duct hose. My truck is in storage or I would look to see what my plastic tube is. My snorkels are rectangular.
It is not hard to make a round tube into a rectangle but getting a rectangular tube back round again can be difficult.
I've seen these air ducts at local parts houses, I dont know if i'm allowed to say the name so i'll just abbreviate A.A.P. But they come in different lengths and have a rectangular end on one end and a round on the other. Hope this helps.
