1997 4.6 ran good always taken care of put in garage came back after 3 months started good but sounds like lifter knock but ford garage said it dont have lifter and the motor has to be completly tore down to repair i want to get a second opionen so to speak what do you think
The engine doesn't have traditional lifters like a pushrod engine. It does however had hydraulic valve lash adjusters and hyd timing chain tensioners. Neither require complete disassembly to get to. I would try another shop. It sounds like a stuck lash adjuster and it may unstick itself if you drive it for a bit.
hello i purchased a 1997 f150 super cab with 4.6 windsor it has 150 k on motor i bought it knowing the motor would need to be rebuilt ,the guy took great care of this truck, dealer serviced ,. he drove to work 100miles a day .the reason he sold this truck is the motor started knocking,,, on initial startup it would run fine then 5min into the run or so it would start to knock.so i bought the truckand i pulled the motor and proceeded to take the motor apart and in the bottom of the oil pan there was alot of sludge/and crust and the main thing, was on the oil pump tub screen, it was about 90percent stopped up plus as the pump started to pull oil it was getting some sludge only allowing 10percent oil flow thus the reason for the motor knock im presently re build the engine right know if it was'nt for the screen stopping up this motor would have went a lot more miles some of the mains looked like the had 30thousand miles on them and the rods to, i said all this, to let you know ,what was wrong with this truck ,yours sounds like oil flow to the valve lifters generaly what will happen after a vehicle has set for a while they will get dry and gummy from the old oil and need to run a little while and heat up to desolve the dryed oil deposites so they can build up with oil and then they will usally quiten down not to say this is your problem only a ideal
ps you also could run a 5minute motor flush this may help you

Reason: to add somthing
This is why keeping the oil changed , and keeping the filters and PCV valve changed according to the owners manual is really important. My 88 5.0 Mustang has been run very hard in the 159,000 miles that I have put on it since I bought it new. I have always used Motorcraft or Castrol oil in it and Nothing but Motorcraft oil filters and it still runs like a scalded dog and holds 55psi of oil pressure hot.
I am suprised that if it was properly serviced, that it would have that much sludge in it.
My 96 Windstar has 133,000 miles on it and when I look into the valvecover with the oil cap off when changing the oil, It looks brand new inside.
I have read a few threads about sludged up oil pump pick-ups though. Most seemed to be from lack of preventive maint.
