I just found this board tonight after starting to do some research on the vibration problem I've been having. I can feel the shudder start at about 42mph and gets bad at about 55mph to the point of a vibration. This has been driving me crazy since I bought the truck....less then 3k miles ago. I've taken it to the dealer twice now and all they have done is rotate and balance the tires..then tell me nothing is wrong with the truck.
This was really starting to tick me off to the point that I was getting ready to sell the truck over this.
In all other aspects I love the truck...but the vibration is a game breaker for me.
Since I'll be heading back to the dealership on this issue, any advice on information I could give the dealer would be helpfull, like service bulletins or anything official.
Although I haven't had the same problem with my truck ( Yet....... Gulp, only 600 miles so far...... ), there have been other conversations about this. Search for the other posts and you'll find more details.
I think that you need to convince the Service Manager to go for a ride with you and "see" the problem first hand.
Yes, like VTX said do a search. Go to search at the top of the screen, then advanced search. Type in nibble for the keyword and search the 2004 F-150 forum. There's lots of informative reading.
Well it's going back in the morning. I did check out the post regarding this problem and the only thing I'm confused about is whether the clutch pack for the rear end or the vibration dampener is what resolves the problem.
I dont believe either has fixed it. Have them check and change the drive shaft angle. Another guy posted this fixed his vib, they changed the angle from 3 Deg. to 1 Deg.
I had the exact same vibration problem (50-55mph) with my 2004 F150 Supercab which I bought about a month ago... I took it to the dealer with an agreement that I would return the truck if they ever intended to give it back to me without fixing the problem (talk about motivation).. Anyway, after 10 days in the shop they discovered that the problem was not in the rear axle or because of unbalanced tires.
So they began replacing parts one at a time, until they replaced the entire exhaust system..
That fixed the problem for me 100%.. I haven't had any vibration for the last 1000 miles... I'm not saying that they knew exactly what the problem was, instead they took an educated guess and that worked for me..
Took mine back in again this weekend and got someone to ride with me, they admitted there was a problem, and want to change the rear axle assy. They are to get back to me Mon. and let me know what the FORD Rep says, I'll keep you all posted.
Horsey, I beleive that's what my problem is. There is no vibration throughout the RPM range except a "ROAR" that occurs when first starting off. I simply questioned the service dept about this and the tech rode with me, said he heard the problem and I described it as exhaust resonance at around 1500-2000 RPM. He said to call him back and allow him to drive another truck to see if it did the same. I haven't had time to call him.
I went to dealers few times with same vibration. I have aftermarket wheels and tires and had vibrations problems before. Thought that the new wheel combo will fix the problem. NO it didn't. Placed two O-rings around the drive-shaft (opposite offset) - NO vibration. Took it to the dealer - replaced driveshaft, ALL IS GOOD!
Document everything. Do not let someone just "tell" you something, get it in writing.
Prepare now for a worst case scenario and hope that it is fixed prior to that. There are many different solutions to the "vibes" some work for some people, others work for some people, and then there are still some trucks out there that have no cure.
Beware of them telling you that your truck is "within spec" this is BS and Ford knows it.
Hopefully your issue is something simple. Make sure the tire are being ROAD FORCE BALANCED, not just a high speed balance that most places do. This requires a special balancer to do it (a Hunter). The 04-05 F-150 is very tire sensitive and requires a much more precise balance than most other vehicles.
Good luck and read all the previous posts about vibrations to get educated so you can talk to the dealer informed.
I just bought my truck about a month ago and within the past week or so have been experiencing some minor, yet noticeable vibratioins around 40-45 MPH. I was just going to brush it off as the result of poor road conditions, which still might be the cause, seeing as Lubbock Texas does not have the best roads in the world. Now, if it gets anymore noticeable, I will at least have an idea of what the problem might be.
Briantex, if your vibration is torque-sensitive, then the rear ring and pinion likely need to be replaced. If it is not torque-sensitive, then it might be the driveshaft or something else. Ford TSB 04-25-7 and TSB 04-25-8 cover these issues.
I was always happy to brag neather of my 04s had vibration, up untill a month ago. The Dk. shadow 2wd XL longbed 4.6 truck started vibrating at around 65mph at about 26,000 miles. Now it has 28,000 and its bad. But since its a lease and I am already WAYYYYY over miles Im hopeing to use it as a out.
My 2004 XLT 4x4 5.4 X cab shortbed is just fine at 6500 miles!
