The Story:
I let Norton expire.... was busy w/ the baby and wasnt home for about 2 weeks. Brother and sister use the PC and go crazy downloading. Computer not working right when I get back home
I download AVG, run it, it scans about 1.25 gigs of my hardrive each time and closes itself. During that time, it says it has found 2 virus's but wasn't done
What do I do???????????????/
my computer got all screwed up a few weeks ago from the shop-nav worm. i had norton on my computer but it would not run well with it onboard(its kind a old) so i took it off and was hit. i downloaded spybot and had to run a program i found on the net to uninstall the shop nav software. the sypbot cleaned everything up, then i had to reload microsoft explorer and reload comcast's softwear. everthing is good now,the computer runs better now than it has in a long time. i will update and run spybot"search and destroy" abouut once a week now
I use about a half a dozen different ones,I know it is overkill but sometimes one will catch something that others wont.Do a google search on these, they are all free to download and they work!Stinger,Ad-aware,spybot search and destroy,Webroot spysweeper,Bigfix, and AVG anti-virus.
Are you saying that you don't want to, or can't resubsribe to Norton?? Basic Norton AV has kept my PC safe thru all of these latest bugs, and has them blocked or quaranteened. Go to the Norton site with your credit card, sign up for another year and download the latest definitions. It won't cost you any extra money to re-sign even if you have let it expire. It should be less than 25.oo bucks for basic NAV.
I am a firm believer in Norton. I have never had any problems at all since I installed the full Norton program, fire wall and all. I also use Spybot Search & Destroy. As I am just semi-computer literate, I would not be with out it. I first used McAfee and had so many problems I had to take my computer to Gateway to get it re-formatted. They said that they have so much trouble with McAfee that they only install Norton because it is trouble free and bullet proof.
Im not paying Norton anything... not worth it in my opinion. Ive had better software for free.
Amen- try zdnet.com along with all the spyware you can find.
I am on cable and never get hit. I got hit big time today.
Webroot spy sweeper is a great program, otherwise I would have been showing XP another window. Make sure to quarintine all through the process or you may re-infect. Also reboot before getting back online, a simple rule I forgot today..
Good luck.
If you don't like Norton that is fine, but I would suggest completely removing Norton from your computer.Your PC may bog down if you try running other antivirus programs with Norton in the background, even if you think Norton is disabled. Problems arise when you don't completely uninstall NAV.The uninstall process is difficult and involves finding and deleting individual files. It is a complex program that gets into every dark hidden corner of the most obscure files in your PC. It will cause exactly the kind of problems you originally described( locking up mid-scan). My PC is two years old, and I haven't been down for a virus yet, thx to Norton, they have been updating my virus protection every week. If you use free software, you may be getting less protection than needed. that company may not have the money or resources to update your program as the need arises. Good Luck.
Mcafee has a free virus scan online. It runs an activeX control to do the scan. I have used it on my MicroScum Winblows drive occasionally. Typically though, I run Linux and am quite happy with it.
I've run Norton for years and never gotten a virus. You can pic up a copy of 2003 on Ebay for cheap. Make sure you get one with the 1 year of updates. Watch shipping costs some sellers make up their low price with inflated shipping. When I first got a computer I used Mcafee and got a virus that attatched to the update software. A virus that could update itself SWEET. I'd stick with Norton!!! My conspiracy theory voice does tell me though that the guy writing the virus file sits in the cubicle next to the guy writing the antivirus software!!! Any thoughts?
I went to housecall and did an online scan since my AVG kept closing itself
I have so far these virus's"
bkdrsdbot.dp
troj istbar.eh
worm nachi.b
worm agobot.get
worm agobot.get
dos agobot.gen
troj popsy.a
bkdr sdbot.dp
worm francette.f
The that AVG would pickup before it closed were:
psw.small.d
irc/backdoor/sdl
It also deleted some file first off on housecall
The onesfrom housecall says non cleanable... what do I do?
And the 2 from AVG.... I cant clean w/ AVG because it closes before it gets done scanning
Any ideas?
