97 Explorer 4x SOHC - please help diagnose a problem
Auto trans, 4.0, 39k miles. Makes a metallic clicking sound on the driver's side of the engine compartment every 5 seconds or so while idling in gear, the click sounds like a relay is kicking something on. It will idle up slightly and then click, and keeping cycling between the click and the purr of the idling up. Power doesn't seem to be affected when accelerating, and rarely, but occassionally clicks, when it is idling in Park. Seems to be at it's worse when I'm uphill in drive with the brake on. It doesn't surge forward when it does this. I occasionally hear the click when I'm slowing down to go around a corner. The click sounds like when an electric fan kicks on, but the clicking occurs when it's cold or hot.

It is your A/C compressor cycling on and off. It will run anytime the temperature is above 50F and you have your selector switch put on any postion except vent, heat (floor only) and off. If it is cycling every 5 seconds, it sounds like you are low on refridgerant.
