I have a 2000 ranger, 2.5 efi (4cylinder) 5 spd, 107,000 mile. As I come to a stop, at about 30 mph I put in the cluch and coast. With about one in five stops the engine will die. No other problems, runs good, start ez, new air filter. Also if im driving on a perfictly level road 30-40 mph with very very little pressing on the gas pedel (just enuf gas to mantain speed) the engine will surge slightly. I assume theres a problem with the thortil control at low engine speed. Im thinking the engine stall and surging are related with some auto/idle control value ?????
Thanks for any help
Don
The surging could be be related to the IAC too, I suppose, but it sounds more like a clogged fuel filter, injector(s), or other fuel delivery issue to me.
When is the last time the motor had a tuneup (plugs, wires, etc)?
I had the same problems with my '99 5spd B3000. I believe that Rockledge is correct in fingering the IAC. It controls the air bypass around the throttle. If it is slow to respond to rapid throttle changes (like coming to a stop w/o downshifting), the engine will stall; if it's malfunctioning or sticking, it could open momentarily during steady driving, causing a surge (it's just like tapping the gas pedal - the throttle opens and lets more air in).
I don't know how much these cost. I've read that cleaning them doesn't do much (the problem might not be gunk buildup but some mechanical or electrical problem inside the IAC).
I cleaned it, but I also replaced the gasket w/ sensor safe RTV. The original gasket (fiber) was fairly compressed and I didn't feel that it could provide a good seal. Both of these actions have seemed to remedy my stalling problem.
A good first check is to put a vacuum guage on the engine to see if there are leaks. A hose might be cracked or not connected. If you don't have one, buy it. They aren't expensive and a vacuum guage is a valuable troubleshooting tool. If the vacuum is OK, follow Rockledge's advice. Good luck.
strang but true. because I had a check eng & abs lights on along with a failing speedometer I replaced the speed sensor (top side differesial) that fixed the lights and speedometer BUT it seem to have also fixed my engine stall and surg.
Thanks to all.
